is this motor any good
that's exactly what you're going to get here... some saying ya and some saying no.
the sohc lovers like me will say ya it's a good mini-me block
and then the dohc people will say no go dohc power...
its all int he opinion you're not going to get a straight answer anywhere

it is not a mini-me. Technically, a mini-me is a sohc nonvtec with a vtec head. But, semantics aside, I'll say this: I hate to sound like a ricer, but the D16Y8 is like the TYPE-R of SOHCs lol. It has the biggest sohc intake manifold, the highest sohc compression (pretty sure), an aluminum oil pan, and an aluminum A/C bracket. It also makes the most SOHC power. (im talking about D series SOHC motors)
It's a good motor if you're on a budget. Sounds great, and it makes decent power. Plus the D series is SUPER reliable (NA), and gets awesome gas mileage.
Seeing as my handle is "B serious", I dont really like the D series. But if i was forced to pick one out, the D16Y8 would have to be it. The EX trans is also geared well. Although, i'd take the trans from a D16Z6 (92-95 Si, EX or Del Sol Si).
I once threw a D16Y8 off a 5 story building, and it made a loud *** noise. and that's allright by me

been driving with my d16y8 for about 3 years now, haven't had the money to buy anything better yet, but i certainly don't think its a bad motor. very dependable and with a turbo kit on it you can make some very good power.

oiling problems? my friend's Y8 did blow up from oil starvation around a long sweepin turn at high speed. I did love my Z6....but iduno the Y8 is more refined, and it sounds a hell of a lot better. for a sohc anyway.
