Just replaced axle on 97 Civic, now fluid leaking?
I looked at the FAQ on this forum for the axle replacement and did exactly as it stated. I have to say it was one of the smoothest jobs I've done since I was pretty prepared. We didn't run into any problems at all.
One thing I did not do was grease the axle where it touches the transmission though. This sounds like all it does is lubricates it and reduces friction right? Well now after about 5 weeks later, I see fluid leaking out from where the axle meets the transmission. The install was about as smooth as it could get. Anyone have any idea what it could be?

you grease the axle to keep from damaging the seal and that is most likely what you did. its not likely but the new axle may be a little smaller than the old one.

What does it take to replace the seal? What's the actual name of this seal?

It's called an axle seal. You need to pull the axle again, and replace it.
A seal puller tool gets it out in seconds. But, you can different things to pull it out.
