its not often that any of my work comes back to me. ive only seen one transmission come back, and it was because all the teeth stripped off the input shaft 1st gear of a high torque turbo D16. though it wasnt my fault i still did another tranny free of charge for the guy.
ive never had an engine come back, previous to this d16y8 head that i did for a very loyal customer who kept having coolant loss issues, though it ran well. when they pulled it the problem was obvious and it was totally my fault. i got carried away on the deshrouding after my dykem had already worn off and i went into the gasket circumference on the exhaust side like an *******. totally my fault, warranty no sweat.
pulled it apart today and almost crapped myself to find that the intake ports were 100% clean and completely free of any exhaust contaminants at all. i dont even remember what the seat angles are but it was hand blended on the throats non-concentrically like how larry always said his seats were. i guess the old man was right, they dont flow backwards.

ive only seen a few other heads that i did with mileage on them and they were dirty on the intake, so this was an awful nice surprise. im wondering about the other headporters out there.. how often you see clean intakes on a dirty chamber and what you did at the seat to make them that way?

Ive had several B heads with only minimal "staining" in the intake ports, and almost always its on a common wall of the ports.
Those ports look damn near like you just finished them. Ive only seen one or two of those. One was a BMW M3 head that i did.
Say what you want about Larry, it seems like his specialty is in seat angles, and more often than not, it seems like he's right.

i saw this head in person and honestly, i think mike you need to upgrade that camera.
the pictures dont do it justice at all! the only dirt or discoloration on the intake side came from the carbon in the chamber that fell in when the valves were removed. other than that there was not a single bit of dirt/carbon/oil on the entire intake port. it litterally looked like it was just ported!
good job mike

my camera is actually a pretty nice canon, but ever camera ive ever had hated pictures of aluminum under fluorescent light.
maybe i jumped the gun, brad made the point that its fuel washing everything clean,, and looking at how rich its running, i cant say i disagree.

could be that it's the rich A/F, and i don't doubt Brad's wisdom, but if you've never seen intake ports so clean after similar usage, you may still have achieved something special.

no welding phil.. Y8 heads have flat quench pads already. it looks like i added an island but really i just ground in a lot of roundness around the exh seats to try making everything funnel in quicker from the sides of the chamber istead of hitting the sharp edge of the quench pad. plus it was for turbo and i was trying to give up some CC's without adding pockets to detonate.
