I have the same problem with my 90 hatch. It would turn like it just about to catch on but nope. When it does it sounds like I guess it's running out of gas. I thought it was the main relay but after reading what is on this site (http://techauto.tripod.com/mainrelay.htm) and going through it and checking how it says on the site, doesn't seems like it is the main relay. Maybe just have to replace it and find out.

It definitely has to be the main relay. They happen to get small cracks in the chip-board. Good luck getting it fixed... I always carry a spare with me.

Just pull the main relay, resolder the couple points all the Write-up's point out, and try it. Doesnt cost anything and is usualy the problem.

Oh man, that isn't for the "electronically inept". That's hard work!

In my case if it was the main relay and I get the car to start, the motor should not be bogging and hesitating. Or can the relay contribute to it?
