Default Black paint - why would you want base clear?

I dont see why you would want to use a base clear system for a black car. If you scratch clear coat it makes a white scratch, right? wouldnt this stand out like a sore thumb on top of a black base? To me (not much body experiance) it seems like a single stage black would be the way to go for a street car that WILL get scratched.

Can some of you that know what you are talking about, give me some pros and cons of each method? I'm about 3 weeks away from paint so i need to figure this out, thanks!

Single stage will be a bit cheaper for you, but black is black...a scratch will show no matter what, so will swirl marks.

I'd prolly go with the base and clear just for the added protection.

so a clear coat is more durable than a single stage paint? I assume you mean a urathane clear vs acrylic enamal single stage. How about acrylic enamal clear? how does that compare?

damn man, I thought you were keeping your color so i searched forever to find the right/a different color to paint my car so people could stop thinking i was you on the street. Guess it doesn't matter anymore. Oh well, i'll change it anyways. Good luck with the paint.

also try pming harmonator84, he seems to really know his stuff when it comes to body work and paint.

ha, thats how my list started. I narrowed it down to some sort of grey/gunmetal, gold, black which seems out of the question now which is fine, wasnt at the top of my list, and saffron metallic off the c70 volvo. leaning towards saffron but i've never seen it in person and would like to.

black toyota supras are single stage!!

i say with a color like black, BC/CC is the ONLY way to go. my reason being, black shows everything, after its fresh painted. i dont care how good you are, you will have dust nibs, etc. Wetsanding and buffing will take car of that, provided you do it right. its a lot harder to burn thru 3-4 coats of clear, while wet sanding and buffing, than a few layers of single stage.

single stage is also more prone to post buffing swirl marks
