ok so im ready to do a k20 swap. i know everyone is going to say "search this before you ask" when i ask this question. well i did. and i didnt find anything. i want to know for sure if i can legalize the swap? and if not is there any way around it so i keep my registration and all that good?

 

ur insurance aint have to know just say its a civic with no modifications they dont come to ur house and check

 

i'm pretty sure you can get it bar'd, but in california, the motor has to be the same year of the car or newer.

you need to have a car insured in order to get a car titled.

 

well most people have there car insured if they are about to drop 7 grand for a motor swap

 

It is legal. All K20a's were built after 2001, so theres no way u can get an illegal engine.

The only way you could have problems is if u buy a k24a4 ( CRV engine) or k24a3 ( element) as its meant for a truck/suv, but any k20a/k20a2/k20a3/k24a1/k24a2 and you will be fine as long as u pass emissions.

i been insured since day 1. so lets say i get the engine put in and it gets smogged i can get the registration with no problem?

 

um i believe in california, you have to used a USDM motor and the engine has to be from same year or newer then the car, i dont think a k20a will be bar'd, but others will, except suv/truck k series

im plannin on the k20a2. i jus wanted to make sure before i did anything. thanks for the help.

 

You will have no problem with your registration cuz its a legal swap for your car.

When you come up for smog you'll pass, so dont worry bout it.

It sucks living in California sometimes, but the k20 swap is one that isnt gonna raise any red flags, now a k24, you would have problems with, but the k20, youre golden !!

 

jdm k20a wont pass smog. unless u cat the expletive out of it

K24's out of Accords and TSX's are just fine.
