Modified exhaust is illegal?
I just got pulled over last night by a cop who said he pulled me over because I had a "modified exhaust" on my car. I got a 2.5 in exhaust pipe going down and its got a cat and everything. Is having an exhaust really illegal or is this guy just bsing?
NJ is in the middle of the road, technically they can get you for it, but its almost never been done.
Cali has ****'s running thier Department of transportation. Sucks to live in cali, they just passed all new laws prohibiting modified suspension.

My friend has a full built GSX with a 6 bolt in it and passed emissions and inspections with flying colors. But it's supposedly illegal to modify a car here, haha. I don't think inspection stations care as long as the car does what is it supposed to do

looks like its technically not illegal unless its considered "loud"

Depends on the state and their Decibel ( i think i spelled that right) rating. Think of it this way... ferraris, certain porches, Lambo's, M3 and M5's, Lotus, Aston martin, ect, all higher end cars have fairly loud exhaust notes (depending on car) that are all 50-state legal.
In some states, anything but stock is illegal. I got pulled over a couple of nights ago for a loud exhaust (3" magnaflow). I told him I had a new one already lines up and he just let me go.
However, I live in a hick *** town with rednecks driving truck with straight pipes all the way back. I have never once seen them get pulled over!

That is correct, I live in Cali and so long as your exhaust meets the two requirements, one being 50 state legal or carb approved, and two can not exceed 95 decibles.

Oh so would I have to get a smaller exhaust piping or could I just cut my muffler off and put a smaller one on, then put the regular exhaust on when the heat is off? =x because I know if I put a smaller exhaust on I'd probably be putting my 2.5 back on later anyways XD
ouch dude, im up here in maine....there are trucks here lifted so high people need latters to get in them and have 5 inch dual turnouts. and cops race us
doesnt get much more redneck
doesnt get much more redneck
thats why i like oregon, nothings really illegal- exept no2. but thats ok. my friend got pulled over for no turn sig. and he had a t4 pushing 18psi, and got a complament from the cop that his set up was awsome
been pulled over so many times for exhaust in CA, sacramento always got away with $10 fine fixing ticket, but now they send you to referee smog. them ****'s keep on coming up with new laws. Cops will pull u over no matter what here, they hatting, u dont see any cops pulling over harleys or trucks or muscle cars with loud *** exhaust cuz most cops own harley or muscle car or truck

expletive that real estate market and the liberals that live there
Just get some kind of Oem exhaust, or an Obx/netami twin loop.
problem solved.
