Default Header Design

Okay, so I am thinking about buying an after market header.

There are 2 basic design differences that I keep seeing.

The first version has all 4 pipes converging by means of a COUPLER, and THEN connected to the down pipe flange.

The second version has all 4 pipes converging RIGHT INTO the down pipe flange. I believe the name brand DC and OBX headers have this style, and other generic forms utilize the aforementioned coupler.

My basic concern is: which design is more structurally functional/stable?

Are there any differences in power -for example- does one produce better mid-range power or high-end power?

Gracias.

Header design is a serious art form. Basically what you want to achieve is the fastest possible exit for your exhaust gases. Your runner length, and bends will affect your gas exit speed.

Personally, I think that on the D17, neither one is the better design, but in theory if the tubes go to a conical coupler, it should increase efficiency, due to the gas expanding and contracting as it heats and cools. But i dont have the ability to flow test either design, and I'm sure the companies that manufacture them do, so I'm just making an educated guess based on experience i have with building exhausts for V8s.

Realistically I'd bet that you would see the same lack of big HP gain with either design.

I have a used dc sports header for the 01-03 honda civic ex.
I had this header on my em2 for about a month now and have now decided to go turbo so no longer need this header, it's stainless steel so you don't have to worry about it rusting, and is made by a company that you can trust.
I will let this header go for 200 shipped in the lower US I paid 400 for it and am willing to let it go for half the price i paid for it.
IF your not interested i am going to put it on ebay.

kamikaze header, is probably one of the best headers you could buy for the money. so you might want to look into that, they cost around the same as a dc header... i think?

if im wrong, plz someone correct me.

Are you kidding me?!

The posts about header for sale are outright RUDE, and have NOTHING to do with the topic of this post!!

The oringinal topic was if the DESIGN of the header makes a significant difference, not WHAT BRAND or WHAT PRICE I can get them for.

Post it in the for sale thread!

Now.. please don't post with what brands you think are the best, as this is pretty much nonsense. A quality designed 'generic' header will perform just as well as any name brand.

Sorry i did not mean anything by posting this. You said
"Okay, so I am thinking about buying an after market header."
All i was saying was that i had a dc sports header if you where interested in it since you where looking for one to buy. ( header in general)

And to answer your question yes my style header did make a significant difference, I mean not a huge difference of 50 hp or anything like that, but maybe 5-10hp.

I highly doubt you'd see more than 10 with an entire exhaust system from header back.

But the box says 10hp+
Combined with the DC Sports sticker that came with it that he stuck on his window, and his turbonator, he got probably 30.

there are actually 2 DC Sport headers for our cars. one is the shortty header as seen above,

the other, is a race header, which is completely different in design:

That one replaces the catalytic converter, and in doing so allows for longer runner length, which should increase gas velocity if properly designed, generating more HP.

However, the biggest gain with that race header is in the fact that you are eliminating the cat.
