I thought 96-00 EX's came with the D16Y8, which would be a V-Tec motor. The Dx motor is non-vtec. Thats probably why.

i could be mistaken maybe the 97 is a d16y8 but i'm pretty sure i saw d16y7 on the 96 DX i drove last night. thinkin about it but i'd need a power steering unit as well as a motorswap. and i was hoping to hold off on a motor swap for a while... guess i'll wait for the right car and not jump into anything
It might have been, but people have been known to swap non-vtec SOHC motors into ex's because it blew and they needed something cheap. Are you looking to buy either of these two? If so how much are they asking for each?
i used to have a 97 EX SOHC v-tech
and i was thinking about buying this 96 DX
but the non-v-tech just makes more work for me
so i think i' might wait and go to a police auction or somethin.
