Default Noise after Timing Belt / Waterpump Install

Well a couple weeks ago I thought my waterpump took a dump. So this past weekend I did the whole big shabang. Tbelt, Wpump, all belts, all gaskets and seals. The list was long.

When we did the timing belt we followed the helms exactly, often referring to a couple writeups from here and preludeonline... When we set everything to TDC, and then tried to put the timing belt on, it was always a 1/2 tooth off. I have been told that is normal and ok. Is this true?

I mean, the car runs like a champ. I would know if it was out of time right? Car would run like sh*t?

Now I can hear what I think is a small exhaust leak, but I am not sure. A few weeks back I put in a new o2 and had to break my header into pieces and the gasket between the header and collector was fubar. I had to buy some copper gasket stuff to try and fix it. It worked up until my waterpump died. But now it may be failing, but the timing seems off....

The noise couldn't be anything related to new belts/pump can it?

I had my t-belt/water pump done a few months ago and it was making a noise, turns out it was the tensioner going shitty, mine was like whining though, almost sounded supercharged, what's the noise sound like?

I had the S/C sound when I did mine....I was told it was too tight and swapped to an H23 manual tensioner which is a must IMO.

Thanks for the replies.

I did the full auto -> man tensioner conversion too. Sorry I didn't say that. The belt was tightened to spec. So I think that is fine.

I mean it sounds exactly like an exhaust leak to me. I need to get a pole and try and find exactly where it is coming from.

I just wanted to make sure it has nothing to do with being off timing.

If out of time, even by a bit, it would run like crap right?

usually you can notice one tooth. especially if its the exhaust cam (because thats what the dizzy runs off).

I know I noticed when my exhaust cam was one tooth off but I have not experienced the intake being one off.

Hmm..I guess my timing is ok. I must just have a plain 'ole exhaust leak somewhere...

Need to buy some new gaskets :D

Well I would be sure because my intake cam was off about 5 degrees and Im boosted and when we turned the boost up there went the ringlands on my arias pistons. Gone..........................

Yea..I think I am good. I mean it runs great I just hear an exhaust leak. Unless bad timing creates an exhaust leak I guess I am ok...

same thing happened to me I think my belt was on too tight.. or the manual tensioner was dying.. i rolled it and it felt ok so i decided to reuse it.. prolly wasnt all that good of an idea but hey i got an h22 now!

Wierd. I don't have a timing belt sound, I just have an exhaust leak. Which is probably from lowering and raising the engine to do the w pump / t belt job...

Can you guys describe the noise a little further..

if you are reffering to the supercharger whining sound, then the only way to stop it is to loosen it and retension the belt properly.

-break the tensioner belt loose
-re-tighten tensioner bolt
-turn crank approx. 3-4 teeth on the cam gear
-loosen tensioner bolt and then re-tighten to 37 ft./lbs.
