the charcoal canister stores the gas vapors/fumes from the fuel tank, which then gets released into the intake manifold to get burned.

yes you need it. it doesnt hurt performance or anything. it actually helps.

and for those that dont know, a charcoal canister contians activated charcoal that traps gasoline vapors from the fuel tank, and then later purged and drawn into the engine. its part of the EVAP system.

EDIT: hondadriver beat me to it

it absorbs and stores fuel vapors that expand from the gas tank, then when you drive the car the canister gets vented and the vapors are then drawn into the engine and burned

oh and it doesnt purge during WOT or anything like that. does so at normal driving under certian criteria. so it doesnt affect the mAd tYte VTAK yo!

so if you are thinking about taking it out, just leave it. doesnt hurt and actually helps cool the combustion chamber. so its beneficial.

Does anyone know if this thing ever needs replacement or could hinder performance after an ungodly amount of miles? My thought is that anything that filters something will eventually need replacement.

The charcoal canister is also a good reason not to top off your tank. It's meant to handle vapors, if you overfill the tank, liquid gas can back up into the canister and ruin it.
