Stock for stock, the 04 seems to have a little more mid-range than the '04. The riding position is a bit more aggressive on the '04. In terms of smoothness, they're about the same. It's just more work to get the '01 tuned (need to rejet). They fixed the 2nd gear problem on the '03+ but I've never had any 2nd gear problems with either one of my '01s (poor rider shifting contributed to most 2nd gear problems)
Overall, the '04 feels a bit more narrow, have more power, and a little easier to ride fast at the track (but then again, I'm slow).
