**DIY brake calipers** [pics, 56k gtfo...]
aight, so for sure this has already been done, but i was doing it and had a camera, so heres my first DIY.
Ok so, i'm getting my rims on next week and i want the brakes to look nice and pretty when i do, so i went over to ****-mart and picked up a can of high heat paint, gathered some supplies from around my house and tackled it this afternoon.
i basically just didn't want the brakes looking rusty, so i stuck with flat black. At the store they also had: glossy black, chrome, gun metal, red and yellow

heres the ugly wheel:

you need your trusty honda jack:

so then you jack up the car, then after much struggling and grunting, you remove the wheel:

then i sanded with some 100 grit sand paper for the rust, followed by a quick pass with some steel wool. this brings the rust to the surface and its kinda powdery:

after that i brushed on some rust killing solution (motomaster) and let it sit for a couple of minutes. Then following the directions for the solution i rinsed with water (used a squirt bottle to avoid getting everything wet), and while it was still wet, i wet-sanded with 600 grit sandpaper. I then cleaned and dried the whole caliper and began taping off the rest of the brake and suspension.

then i wet the ground around to make sure there was no dust while painting, and followed the directions from the can. i did 2 heavy coats, waiting a couple of minutes in between and then 15-20 mins at the end before putting the wheel back on.

i'll post some more pics when i get my rims on next week.
by the way if anyone wants to by 4X 13" OEM honda steelies, i'm willing to sell cheap. They have toyo tires on them with some decent tread left and their all in tip top shape... I'll even clean them! pm me

Yes, this way it will look like this:

i would not recommend using your oem jack, my friend was using that jack to do some work on his calipers to remove them and the jack slipped and the rotors cut 4 of his fingers off from the mid knuckle up and a piece was wedged in between the 2 pieces of the rotors.
i say, be safe...use a floor jack and JACK STANDS. you car is going to be up for a while, i would not trust it on the small scissor jacks....thats jus my opinion

yea i guess i could have undone the calipers, didn't really think of it... didn't want to remove them completely though cuz then you have to bleed the brakes. Anyone have suggestions for the rear drums.. i'm not doing a rear disc conversion anytime soon, so i was just going to paint them black too, but i had a look today and their rusted pretty bad

so, can he only count up to 6 now? or did they sew the fingers back on.

they could not get the small chunks out the rotor, so his fingers are nubs now
sorry to be all gory but it takes something like that to open peoples eyes about what it really means to be safe and have common sense

Ouch... dude... That sucks... I'm sorry about your friend...
As for this method, good write up, however, I have done the same EXACT thing before and it didn't hold up well . I used the same brand of paint but I used blue instead of black for my old ricer car and the color just didn't stay. THe best brand out there is the one i nthe can that you brush on. They sell it for like $16 at Walmart and it's called Brake caliper paint. Thats my $.02

i'm still looking for some help with the rear drums.. their in pretty rough shape. i have tremclad rust paint, i thought of maybe doing a base coat with that but i don't know cuz its not high heat, so would just a top coat of high heat work?!?!

i'll see what happens in the front but i'll probably have to redo it next year anyways cuz of the salt and **** here in the winter

I did something similar. I took Duplicolor red engine enamel and sprayed the calipers down. The pics were from when I only had the front...I did all 4 though. Still holding up pretty nice
