Default Shift Linkage Pin Question

What's up HT, my engine swap is going well besides the fact I cannot get the shift linkage pin (bitch pin) out. I have purchased a punch made specifically for the pin and still it will not budge. I think the previous owner did a very shitty job installing it. My question is would it be okay to drill the pin out because I have really beaten this pin and I don't think it is good for the transmission to take all that vibration and stress. Anyone have any experience with this? Thanks

BTW, it is a 96 GSR tranny if that makes any difference. This will be mated to a b18b when the swap is done just to let you guys know what I am up to.

try spraying some lube on it, and just keep hitting with a punch and hammer. Its not a fun job.

I have, I even tried torching it for a bit. I guess I will keep at it but still can anyone tell me if I would be alright to drill it if worst comes to worst. I have even tried the c-clamp technique, this is very frustrating.

Just keep hitting it, eventualy the pin will come out. This is an area where alot of blood, sweat, and tears go into a swap.

I suggest using a punch that is the same diameter as the pin, or just one size up, not smaller (so that it fits inside)
Ive never had any luck using the "proper" sized punch, and always just end up using the larger size instead.

Or...try a bigger hammer.
Its pretty impossible to f*ck up...so you cant really blame the last owner......

alright, I purchased a punch from matco tools that is made for honda/acura shift linkage pins, it slides inside the pin and has a shoulder that is the same as the outer diameter of the pin so its a pretty good tool for the job I would assume. Thanks for the reply.

just a regular sized hammer, not sure on the weight of the head but your typical nail hammer, Im going to go try using a larger hammer real quick. Once again, thanks for all the super prompt replies. This is a great site.

oh geez...like a 16-24oz hammer?
get something bigger than that...like a 3-5lb sledge

(16oz=1lb)

Thats your problem....you need more oomph

tried the 5 lb sledge still no budge. It looks like it is mushroomed from the last owner, the bottom of the linkage is all bashed like he just hit it with a hammer w/o a punch.

if its smashed that bad, you might have to drill it out.

Penetrating oil and a SHITLOAD of patience would be my suggestion. Happened the same way with my swap.

EDIT:
If the pin and the linkage is all mutilated like that, you may just need to drill the ****** out.

alrighty, thanks dudes. I got it soaking in a healthy coat of pb blaster while I go to work for the rest of the evening. I will give it a few more goes tomorrow and if no chips, then the drill's going to work.

Sweet. Post pics of your imminent victory. Maybe get one of you melting the pin after you get it out.

How high is the car on jack stand???? Or just drop the engine/tranny with linkage still attach ot it and removed the pin after.

that was another option I was considering, Ill have to lift the car up with the engine hoist after I drop the motor down though because it isn't jacked up high enough to clear the motor... It would definately be much more convenient to remove the pin, I think I am just going to drill it if it doesn't tap out tomorrow.

i donno if it will work with your pin but if you use one of the bolts that holds the ac compressor to the mount on the front side of the motor it fits perfectly. I was hitting mine for about 3 hrs strait and then read about the ac bolt and it came out in like 2 hits. Use a big hammer too! hope this helps

I got it out, I drilled it just a bit and it seemed to weaken its grasp just enough but now my punch is wedged in there. Just my luck. Thanks honda tech for the advice though.
