Default Snapped off block bolts

Alright not sure where this topic fits. So I bought a 95 gsr little over a year ago as a fixer upper/project car. I've been working on it here and there and have fixed almost everything I wanted to. I left the biggest problem for last. So the previous owner had snapped off not one, but two engine mount bolts in the block. They are specifically the drivers side upper mount bolts. So he managed to break off 2 of the 3 bolts into the block. And by my examination the only way to fix this is by drilling them out and re tapping. So far I've done all the repairs myself. But this one is over my head, which is why I probably left it for last. I am not going to attempt this. But I have no idea how to approach it. The only way I can see that they will be able to drill and tap this is with the engine out of the car. I am not removing the engine myself, I want to find a place that can take it out repair it and put it back in on site. But I don't know what type of shop to take it to. And how much would you estimate this job would run?

try a local mom and pop automotive center.

i doubt anyone is going to want to try to extract bolts from an engine that is installed in a car...

i managed to extract a broken bolt in the same location.

what i did was weld another bolt to the broken one in the block and turn it out.

but if you dont have a welder then you are out of luck........try taking it to a good repair shop.....they should be able to help you out.

^^^^^ That's what I always do when a bolt breaks in aluminum just weld a nut on top of the stud and the heat from the weld would melt any type of thread lock on the bolt and expand the aluminum up a little and the bolt will come right out.

Yep... if there is a bit sticking out, put a nut on it and weld in the center. The heat really helps loosen the bolt.

If its recessed, you can weld a rod onto it and do the same thing.

find a bolt that's smaller in diameter and weld it to the end. Smaller means you can get a better weld so it doesn't just snap off again. Then use a wrench to back it out.

Interesting, I have access to a welder. i don't weld but my grandfather has a tig and mig welder. he could probably do that. Do you think that it would be possible to do with the engine in the car? Because I don;t have the means or the time to tear the engine out myself.

It makes a bit harder but sure, take the precautionary steps of disconnecting the battery make sure nothing gets melted or catches fire you should be able to do it.

When I worked at a muffler shop we always had studs and bolts break off in heads. Since they are mostly cast with a steel bolt we would take a torch and heat up the bolt and quick hit the oxygen and blow most of the bolt out. Then we would tap it. Yeah not a good idea to be concentrating a torch on the head, but we never had any comebacks.

You could try to disconnect the lower mount (as well as the upper if it is still in place), jack the motor up from the oil pan flange or crank pulley for that matter... something around that vicinity... once you have it up in the air, use a centerpunch to mark the middle of the broken bolts and use a good drill bit to drill out the middle. After that use an extracter to get it out. you will probably need a drill with a 90 degree head on it though it i remember correctly to fit it. if you really FUBAR just helicoil it. Iv fixed blocks with 3/4" holes in them where the mount (used to) bolt up! HTH
