Default -1,+2...............benefits??

some friends of mine kind of talked me into doing different gearing on my bike. this is one topic im kinda new to. if im correct, this gearing setup will shorten the gears and it will rev a little higher. someone correct me if im wrong. also, will this be a good gearing for trackriding or should i use stock gearing........

Benefits :
Bike feels a lot more Torquey (sp?)
Acceleration is much better
If converting to a 520 chain, less reciprocating mass, helps acceleration further.

Downsides :
May be looking for 7th gear a lot more
First gear can get a bit jerky
Wheelies in 2nd gear at WOT will not be hard to do. (this can be a downside or a benefit, depending on how you see it)

As for the track, each track is different. A lot of turns = shorter gearing is better. Long straights = Longer gearing (usually stock) is needed so youre not bouncing off the rev limiter in 6th gear.

idealing you would run gearing that would allow you to reach your top speed quickly on the straight (at the track) but not have you bouncing off the rev limiter working you way down it. You'd want to be just about to redline in 6th gear just before you mash on the brakes for the turn.
-1/+2 is popular for the street because it allows you to rev high enough to actually get some torque, while not speeding as much to do so.

Another down stide is gas mileage. On the freeway you'll be cookin along at a higher rpm than usual.

if by rev higher you mean at a given speed you'll be at a higher rpm, then yes. If by rev higher you mean you can rev further than 15k rpms, then no.

Keep in mind you're bike will NOT REV HIGHER. It only makes you rev quicker...

Don't worry about that, if you can keep the front down in first you can keep it down in 2nd. I was just emphasizing the fact that you can chop the throttle in 2nd and power up the front if you wanted. The front wont come up if you dont want it to. Throttle control is key my friend. And cover that rear brake if youre scared to go WOT in 2nd for piece of mind. No worries.

it also hastens the mileage reading

Your speedo is not affected if the speedo-cable reads off the front wheel. Most, however, read off the countershaft sprocket.

your speedo will most likely be affected and you'll need a speedo healer to get a correct reading.

My gas mileage hasn't really changed very much with a -1/+2. Its a lot louder on the freeway, rpms are about 1k more, but you should be wearing ear plugs anyhow.
