shaky steering wheel
hey. if i drive my car for a little bit and im around or above 50 mph, the steering wheel starts shaking. does anyone know why that happens? do i need a wheel alignment?

You need to first check your lug nuts and make sure they are tight. Then get your wheels & tires balanced...they should do this when you get the tires put on anyway, and if you still have the problem, try a front end alignment.

Check and see if the tread on your tires is uneven, also when were your wheels and tires last rotated and balanced. when was an alignment last performed?
best bet is you hit 3 two by fours nailed together and it bent your rim.....
i know thats why my steering wheel started shaking lol

Here's one for you. A persistant, intermittent vibration. 50+, happened through 3 sets of wheels, 2 alignments, and 2 sets of rotors. Tie rods and ball joints all check out fine. What could it be?

Ummmmmm why the hell would i do that? rotors are brand new brembos and calipers would not make the steering wheel shake, they are new as well. If you meant to say check your calipers too to the guy actually asking me the question i still think its pretty dumb. Its the rotors or the rims causing that. Calipars maybe if you wore the pads to **** and its just the calipar rubbing on the rotor.
As for me, it was obvious that i bent my rim and nothing else. a lowered car on 205/40/17s driving 120km and having 3 2x4s nailed together doesnt stand much of a chance of not bending a rim lol

Don't be an *** dude.
If you have a bad caliper, one side of the piston could be stuck and with uneven pressure on the rotor you could get vibration.
Open your mind up, you don't know it all.

i HAD the same problem last week.
turns out 3out of4 of my STRUTS were blown.
..while replacing them i dropped some new TEIN springs too and dont forget to get an alignment after.

and to your question. a bad alignment only would make the car swerve to one side (left or right) when u let go of the wheel ( test it in a safe area AHHA) it wouldnt make the steering wheel shake.
*update* i just got my car back from the alignment and its still shaking and pulling to the left. the dude was tryin to make some bullshit up by sayin my camber is messed up and i argued with him for a bit and then he finally said he didnt know the problem. so what else should i get checked out?
the problem is either in your front end (I.E. tie rod ends, inner tie rods, ball joints, or even your steering rack) but im sure they checked everything before doing an alignment. most common reason for your steering wheel shake is tires!!!!!! if a tire is old, worn or even happened to hit a pot hole the belt in the tire can seperate causing an irregular rotatin in the tire.--- you need to have your wheels put on a wheel balancer and for one check to see if they are balanced and watch the tire as it spins-- icould wobble from the tir or the wheel. if your rear tires are better try rotating them and seeing if it still shakes. the only other posibilities would be loose lug nuts or a extremely bad wheel bearing which both of those things would have been caught when the alignment was done

No your car would pull not cause a vibration..... it would pull when driving most likely but it would pull to one side even harder when you brake. and i have never expierienced a vibration or a steering wheel shake caused by a stuck caliper. sorry but threads are about opinions and experiences not arguments about other peoples steering wheel shake

I just have to add to this......
I thought I had the same issue with my daily driver until I realized it was the RIPPLED road I was driving down every day. I would cruise 1mi@35 to the HWY and then drive the HWY for 10mi@70 and then 1mi@35 again. It took driving the car around a little more to realize this.
Just my .02

i just told you 7 posts ago every single posible part that could be causing it. any good mechanic would be able to find where the shake is coming from. but 90% chance it is a seperated belt in the tire or the wheels out of balance. hard to give advice to a person who just doesnt want to listen. I am an auto technician if that makes you believe me anymore
just go to a Midas or repair shop that does free inspections, if there are reputable techs they will be able to find the shake. I would be able to!
P.S. my wheel shakes too....... my l. upper ball joint is bad and i still have my winter tires on.
Also- does your car still have powersteering??

A bad alignment Can definately cause this.......When I put on my ball/joint camber kit on the rear,it messed up the Toe of the back right tire, and my car was insane at over 50.....it felt like the two sides were fighting each other on which way to go.Dangerous.
