Which filler do you use to weld Chrom-moly to mild steel and where's the best place to find it online? I've heard ER-70S-2...is that fine for chromoly to mild?

Also on the 1.5" .095 Chrom-moly, I've found some but I think the place local to me is giving me the shaft. Anywhere online to get some of that for a good price?

Lastly...lol....I never TIG'd Chrom-moly before, is there anything special I should know?

I use ER70S2 from Mild to Moly and ER80D2 for Moly to Moly.

Just make sure it's super clean. It welds very similar to MS.

Also, is this for a cage or something? Just curious why you need .095 wall thickness....

Thanks...I'll have to pick up some of that. I'm not using it for a cage or anything. If I find a descent supplier online though, I'll probably start doing a few cages here and there. This particular piece is for something I'm working on, and the .095 wall is the thickness I need in order to meet the strength requirement I want.

http://www.chassisshop.com/ will have anything tubing wise you would want. But for anything over 8 feet shipping is $$$. I order 3 20' sticks of 1 5/8" moly for my cage and I think shipping was more than the tubing.
Ebay is also great for buying short pieces.

Yeah Chassis shop has the best prices on Chromoly. Truck freight can get expensive, I think my last steel shipment was close to 60 or 75 dollars. That was on 400+ft of tubing.

i always use 70s-2 for mild to chromoly. works out very well for me.

chromoly to itself i use er80s-d2 for reference

i find its easier to get a really super nice bead with moly to itself and the 80 sd2 filler.

but like he said, mild to moly welds very similar to mind.
onlinemetals.com too is another rescource.

Ordered my stuff from onlinemetals.com....the chassis shop makes you download a catalog and all that sh*t. I always find sites like that a pain in the ***. If Mcmastercarr can have a site with all links then anyone can.

Just waiting for my stuff now....good deal

dont you have any steel suppliers close by. I.E. Alro, Benjamin Steel, Art iron, etc.? How far is South Hampton,PA to you. There is a place called HMB Steel supply. Those small mom and pop fab shops and companies like McMaster Carr will stick it to you horribly.

Call Chassis shop and tell them what you need. They will tell you over the phone how much it is and what quantity they can supply. Plus they will send you a paper catalog for the future.

I haven't found a better price on chromoly tubing than Chassis shop.

Chassis shops buy their material from Steel service centers.

I looked around quite a bit in an attempt to find a supplier local to me and came up empty. Southhampton is far as ***** from me, so that's out.

I'm doing a first setup with the chromoly I just ordered...if I like it in the end I'm gonna make some more, so I'll need more material. I'll call chassis shop when I buy more material...start trying to get costs down.

I would imagine based on the quantity of Chromoly they buy, they would get a better break than most of us, but I could be wrong.
