Default Gas pump stops prematurely before tank is full

Car is a 1998 Honda Accord 4dr LX automatic w/ ~106,000 and maintenance is very up to date. Does anyone experience gas pumps clicking off prematurely when they try to fill up at gas stations? The gas gauge is almost at empty and while I am fillling up, the pump clicks off like it is full, but I have only pumped in a couple of gallons. This happens at every gas station I have been to with some stopping earlier than others. It has happened for a while now and its more annoying than anything. Anyone have the same experience of solution to this?

Fuel gauge could have problems. Does the miles per trip match up to before this problem happened?

Yes they match because I always keep track of my miles per gallon/tank so the gauge should be reading accurately.

I don't have this problem with my Accord; but, had this problem on one of my other cars before. My friend showed me to pull the top of the rubber part a little bit away from the car, so the vacuum wouldn't stop the fuel from dispensing from gas nozzle. A little bit of hassle, but it worked.

I have tried it that way as well. The pump fits snug onto the hole, but it still stops prematurely.

There's a couple vent lines alongside the filler pipe in the fender. Probably have to remove a shroud that protects them from rocks & stuff. Check them out & look for anyplace where they're pinched or kinked or something like that.

i had this problem before. turned out to be the pump handle prematurely stopped. so i held the handle by hand once it stopped and lifted it up instead of letting it rest on its own.

Everytime I pump I always hold the handle down manually. Either way it still stops prematurely. Just replaced the gas cap, but don't think that should affect anything.

kinda similar to what i was saying. i have had a few in too deep and readjusted the handle by holding it up my self while pumping. some pump are picky and/or are going out. if every pump you go to does the same thing, then its some with your car.

If it is bad, would the check engine light be on?
