Best way to paint design on valve cover
I saw one of the valve cover build offs and got some ideas for my valve cover.
My question is, what would be the best way to do it (this will be on a stripped down valve cover)?
Would it be best to tape down the whole design and paint the WHOLE valve cover...then remove the tape and then tape around the outside of the design and fill the design or what?

if you are doing large graphics, or stripes, your best bet is to think like an air brush artist and use a technique called back masking. Where you start off with the primer of course, then the main color, then the accent color, then any striping or detail work, then clear it all to make it flat....some people prefer to pay out the graphic color 1st then the main color, but on VC's there really arent any large parts, you can do either.
here is an example of one i recently did

Mine's going to be very simple...the valve cover will be flat black and the design and lettering will be another color.
I'll post a picture of it when I get home so that somebody can point me in the right direction

Paint the whole valve cover the color you want the design then lay the tape of the design on it then paint it the color you want the rest of the vc to be.

That's what I was planning on doing.
But with the design, could I just lay some tape down where I want the design...then take a Sharpie and draw the design itself on the tape...THEN take an exact-o knife/razor blade and cut around the outside?

(Design will be a bit bigger)
I was flipping through some Bullet For My Valentine merchandise (British metal band) and saw that on one of the shirts (I cutted and pasted it a bit)...but you get the general idea....nothing crazy.
I'm thinking (unless I can find a teal that's similar to my car to paint the valve cover) flat black valve cover and spark plug cover with either white or gunmetal/silver design and lettering.

Ok...last question for people who have experience painting designs on valve covers...
What would be better?
To paint the whole valve cover the color of the design, then tape the design off...and paint the valve cover the color I want it...
OR
VICE VERSA
