Default si headswap car wont start

my buddy blew a headgasket on his dx ef and decided while taking that head off why not upgrade to an si head. i did the wiring for him and its fine, there are no issues with it. when going to start the car we get CEL 8 sometimes. the car also wont start, it cranks gets fuel and spark but just doesnt start. we eventually got the car to start and turned it off then filled it up with oil and it wont start again, it tries to idle but dies out very quickly. it seems like its a timing issue, i dont know if the engine throwing the TDC code would prevent it from starting. we checked timing again and again and it seems fine but it aparently isnt. appreciate any help.

try to ajust the idle or mabe when you put the distributor on its off 180 degrees r u sure its getting fuel? are spark plugs g0od? are all the wires connected correctly in right firing order? not sure i would have to l0ok at it but go over everything carefully and inspect everything again

yeah when i clear the codes it doesnt come up again until its starts but it doesnt stay started like itll die as soon as it starts. i forgot about flipping the dizzy ill have to try that out. but im 100% possitive the wirings right as ive checked it several times now. all the grounds are connected. i really dont want to check the timing again but ill check that out. that would be funny if it was that ef relay that likes to be stupid

did you do an mpfi to dpfi conversion as part of this swap? or just leave it dpfi with si head?

i did all the wiring yeah. im fairly certain its something with either the timing or maybe that main fuel pump relay, but it wouldnt get fuel if it was that. its strang when its cranking itll sound like it starts and itll just instantly die out

what about the injector wiring? that sounds like the most likely cause to me..check to make sure you are getting fuel to each cylinder.

Well, code 8 is for the TDC sensor in the dizzy, so you may still have a problem with the wiring, or the dizzy itself. Not sure on this, but when converting to MPFI can you not use the DPFI dizzy?

did you use a d16a6 head or a d16z6/d16y8 one? The a6 head is not really an upgrade over the d15b2, they're the same casting.

You can actually use the DPFI dizzy, you just won't get the crank position and you'll have to remove teeth from one of the other gears (I forget which, but one of the MPFI swap guides on google has that info in it). It will run like ****, but you would be able to get it running. Without modifying one of the gears in the dizzy, it won't work (my understanding at least).

I think that you have to set the cam timing differently if you use an Si head. The camshaft is physically different and has a different set of timing marks to line up with (at least on the Si block). If you have a service manual, you might check that out.

The code 8 normally is the sensor in the dizzy. It happened to me and I replaced the dizzy and it cranked right up.
