thinking of getting cold air intake on my 91 accord EX .

looking for input about what i should get.

 

AEM, Injen, Weapon R are all good, top of the line brands. Or you can go the $30 eBay slecial way and slap an AEM filter on it. Don't forget a bypass valve.

 

ive heard good things about getting a cheap ebay pipe and buying a K&N filter for it. plus you cant beat the price.

 

No, ebay intakes are crap. They look like crap, come with crap filter, and fit like crap. Brand name ones come with a mounting bolt that prevents the intake from moving around. Ebay ones js slap right on the intake manifold and hang there rubbing all against your AC line, engine bay, etc. Ebay = CRAP do it right and spend extra $ on something good.

Very true. My eBay special SRI is just hanging there You can go with a brand name SRI instead of a CAI because they're cheaper is money is an issue. I just ordered an AEM SRI last night, should be here in a couple days.

 

once a good filter is on the end, its all a piece of pipe...looking at it from a fluids perspective, as long as its smooth and has mandrel bends its all the same (for example, an injen intake and an ebay intake for the same car, same diameter piping, both using the same filter...think there will be any gains other than the weight reduction to your wallet for the injen?). any one can rig up a mounting setup to keep the pipe from clunking around.

that said i only use aem intakes, but if you're on a budget an ebay stick with a good filter will work.

mine came with two mounting brackets. one goes to the side of the engine bay and the other attaches to the stock airbox support bracket.

i vote ebay w/good filter.

 

I have an AEM V2...probably doesn't do jack over the normal CAI. In all reality, it is just a pipe with a filter on it...except the V2 has two pipes. Also, I had a Weapon R "Secret Weapon" on my old Mazda...that has 2 pipes in it. Whether or not it actually did anything - that's another story. All in all, it's really preference. You could listen to everyone argue that ebay intakes are ****, and you should get a name brand...then others say ebay ones are fine. It's all up to how much you're willing to spend.

Name brands are a good way to go since they are reputable, but spending more money doesn't always necessarily mean the product is any better than a cheaper one.

all i have to do is un install the old intake and install the new one.

Piece of cake, nothing special at all. Basically how you remove the stock air intake is how you put the CAI or SRI on. When i did mine though, there was a little black box that had to come off inorder for the SRI to fit under my hood so it would close. That black box had a vaccum line hooked onto it, so now I have a vaccum line floating around in my engine bay. No big deal though.

 

well ive had both ebay intake and an AEM...i first had the good ol' ebay intake with just the ebay filter on it and i thought heck im going to get an AEM cuz it will be soooo much better...well its not...I didnt notice any difference in sound or quality or anything...as someone said before all in all its just a piece of piping with a filter on it..the AEM piping is no better than the ebay piping..they just make it a different color than chrome and slap the AEM logo on it and put an AEM filter on it and sell it for 200 dollars +...I vote ebay intake and a better filter..I wish I would have stuck with my ebay intake and got a K&N filter but oh well

i got a autotechnic short ram for like 85 bucks with shipping from ebay. i like it a lot. and i didnt want to start a whole new thread on asking the question: isnt there a thread on here that has parts from different/universal cars that will fit a 5th gen accord? sry for invading your thread. i did have input tho

actually, not all intake pipes are made equal. often times the ebay pipes interior is rouch and the area where they weld on the vacum hose outlet (im guessing thats what its called) its really rouch on the inside and create restrictions and turbulence in air flow. the difference is minimal but there IS a difference. and of course the fit of the pipe, the ebay intakes i've encouintered have horrible fit. but you get what you pay for. im not against ebay intakes though, its good bang for the buck. and remember too, ebay is hit or miss, there are alot of quality cheap ebay intakes, and even more shitty ones.

Plus if you live in CA...smog central, all those ebay specials are not smog legal. Go w/ at least an AEM, because they're smog legal. That's why they're so expensive. They need to pass tests to get smog legal. That's why DC Sports headers are also more expensive than copies...because they pass smog....

yeah, if the intake isnt CARB exempt, you can get in trouble and get fix it tickets. Ebay intakes are not CARB exempt, but name brands like AEM and Injen are.

 

yea your right..I guess i just got lucky the ebay intake I bought fit perfectly and looked decent too..i like the AEM better but i mean i dont notice a single bit of difference...i guess only because its an intake and it adds a total of maybe 2 HP..OMG WOW lol.i just like the sound of it..the sound of the AEM is a little better..its a little louder and when i hit the torque peak it sounds a lot better than the ebay one did

 

What about a short ram

would the performance be different

 

generally a short ram wont give as much gains as a cold air because its sucking in hotter air. but the trade off is a short ram generally gives better throttle response due to shorter length of piping. but the difference in gains and response from the 2 will be minimal and you will most likely not notice it.
