Missing Vehicle Identification Number (VIN)
Federal law requires that the Vehicle Identification Number appear visibly on the vehicle. Occasionally, due to age or repair, the VIN plate may be missing or unreadable. The Illinois State Police will “tag” a replacement VIN on the vehicle. For further information in the greater Chicago area, call the Illinois State Police at (847) 294-4400; and for further information in the Metro-East area, call the Illinois State Police at (618) 346-3652. This process can be lengthy and should be initiated as soon as possible. It is important that the Illinois EPA be kept informed of the “retag” process to avoid a suspension.
