My Civic Re-build
My 1994 Honda Civic DX has a broken heart (block)
I’ve read the multiple topics but I need an opinion on CURRENT prices and best bang for the buck for my re-build.
As of now the car is lowered on Eibach lowering springs a full Cat-back exhaust and a CAI. The engine is the stock D15B8 with it’s almighty 70hp 8 valve :D, and an automatic transmission. Saves gas, looks good, I was happy.
But now that the option of an engine upgrade is upon me I’ve found my self hunting down a D15b7 with the 102hp will be welcomed. Unfortunately I haven’t found one locally. I have found the D15B JDM with VTEC but I’m not interested in swapping an ECU, re-wiring. If maybe someday I feel the need, a non VTEC would be better for boost
. I want the least pain in getting an engine in, but I don’t mind having to re-build a whole engine for the reliability. A whole tall block drop in with low miles would be ideal, but I’ve had little luck finding one. JDM or USDM is fine.
My alternative option is getting a bare block and build on it. I would look at what I could salvage from my current block, crank, pistons, and everything else would be replaced such as seals, w/p, rings, and so on. I would like to swap the head from the 8v to a 16v, from what I’ve read I would get the additional HP numbers I’m looking for, 70 to 100+, regardless of the block.
Please clarify so that I don’t have to swap another engine in and keeping with my under $600 budget. I would like a little more pep from my daily driver, passing emissions, and the awesome 30+ MPG. Point me to sites, parts, or suggestions.
Thanks

when i bought my car, it was from my mechanic and he got it off someone who overheated the d15b7, when he was gonna sell it to me, he said he could put a 1.5L or 1.6L in direct swap. He didnt want to put a v-tec in because of the ecu and all that **** (same as you) so i told him a 1.6L and he got me a 16valve 1.6L SOHC ZC (JDM) He sold me the whole car after, so i dont know how much the motor was but i think its around 500$, it pushes around 120hp, so its a decent motor, cheap and a direct swap

Look on here or at a local junkyard. Saw a whole swap here not too long ago go for 500. Whole swap couldn't cost more than 500. Good luck.
Just out of curiousity, did you mean to say you have a 1994 CX with a D15B8? If it's a DX it should have came with the D15B7 from the factory. Unless it was swapped out before you bought the car...?

I'm pretty sure it has been swapped from before I got the car. I could tell by the AC lines not lining up to brackets & a dipstick that looked from a late 80's car.
I'm hunting for a ZC, but also wondered if it would matter if it would be an OBDII OR OBDI. could I swap the dizzy & all components from my current engine & still use either?

D15B
the winner.
This engine came with a carb. and what looks to be a fuel pump on the head. My D15b8 does not have this.
Can I cap this off or will I need to put my original head on this block?
