for those linkage people
I have a 91 hf with a LS swap. Bought the car from a buddy that did the swap and everything. well the linkage is hasport. when i got the car in grinded third and forth. but could still get into gear. other times easier than others. well i tho the tranny sincros were junk so i bought a b16 tranny that was available an dropped it in. does the exact same thing with third and fourth gear. two diff trannys and there not even the same. one is ls an one a b16. help is much appriciated thanks
typically if the linkage is the problem, you'll have trouble getting into gears that are aligned on the same side.....
so 1,3,5
or
2,4,R
to me it sounds like an unlucky coincidence
PS pick me up for a ride and maybe i can help diagnose. i'm working in florence right now lol

What mounts are you using?
Allthough I've used...
normal linkage with random mounts,
normal linkage with hasport mounts,
hasport linkage with hasport mounts...
I've had no problems shifting, the shifter is just at the right angle with the hasport mounts and linkage. Hasport linkage is shorter to compensate for the further back placement of the engine with Hasport mounts.
Does your shifter feel loose/sloppy? Are the various bushings in good condition?
Unfortunately the bottom line is if you have a grind it's pretty much certainly the trans, but if other things are messed up it could make things worse.

its only third and fourth every other gear works great. iv taken the linkage out over an over trying to see if a bushing could be the problem but idk what it is. lol thats cool tho give me a way to get a hold of you or somethin. you no alot of ppl around here? everybody knows everybody around here if your into hondas
I have hasport mounts. yea its really sloppy. I tightened up the bushing on the bottom of the shifter and it tightened up some but not alot. the bushings look decent but also look like they could be replaced. and also the shifter plate. were the bottom of the shifter is. that bolts to the bottom of the car. it doesnt sit fully into the whole were the shifter goes. there is a gap bout half inch. it could be the tranny but it does sound weird that two diff trannys doing the exact same thing. thanks for the help guys

A tranny grinds because the insides are WORN. A tranny does not grind cause your linkage might not be right, it would just be really hard for you to find the gear and engage it.
Yes, bad linkages could cause grinding, if the driver does not allow the linkage to properly shift in it's gear. IF you can find the gear fine, but it grinds, it's the trannies fault, not the linkage.

thats the problem i cant find the gear just fine. sometimes it will go into gear like nothing. the shifter is real sloppy and if you sat down in the seat an drove it for the first time you would have trouble finding were first gear is untill you got use to it. i just dont want to go out an spend money on another tranny and it do the same thing again. then spend money on another linkage when the one i have is new straight from hasport. was hoping someone mite of had the same problem an knew exactly what it was
syncromesh can be bought from any gm dealership or pensoil makes a knock off that is just as good and half the price. i have a long process for making the old linkage fit but i've never had to fix a messed up set. i guess you could make a straight cut and place it in neutral and have someone hold the shifter inside the cab an put a couple tack welds on then give it a try. it it works as it should then weld it up or try again.
