No, it was extremely unprofessional. It definitely tarnished what was a great achievement for the whole Audiobahn team.
I see posts on h-tech all the time about the lack of sponsors for sport compact -- this type of behavior is why the sport is lacking in sponsors. You don't call out another race team in the lanes like that -- this is supposed to be a professional sport, not street drags. Besides your driver just went 7.30 (quicker than he's ever gone before) -- jump up and down on your way to your tow vehicle, get in and go celebrate with him at the top end of the track.
Ok, I'll be the first to admit that that was not the most professional thing to do. Our team has now put policies in place to prevent this and Ron will now be promptly tackled to prevent this from happening in the future.
Don't get me wrong I don't like to make excuses but I want to place into perspective of what produced this episode. Imagine someone who works 12 or more hours a day staying away from his family, his health, and everything else that may seem more important, working on a stable of racecars front to back. Fabrication, chassis tuning, engine assembly (for those who put together 1400+ hp race engines, you know what I am talking about), overall racecar maintenance, company finances, sponsorships, team logistics, and getting our team from race to race on a shoe-string budget compared to our competitors. Someone who been there since the beginnings of FWD drag racing, who is very passionate, high-strung but in the end loves our sport-compact industry.
Now, with somewhat of an idea of this guy and his situation, imagine being at a race in the most highly financed class in sport-compact history and going up against the force of GM and Roush teams that overpower you in numbers, resources, testing time, manpower and hell, even education. All of a sudden you are able to go toe-to-toe with this monster of an organization and even beat them from time to time. Not saying that it is right or all would do it, but some of us can be a little too enthusiastic at the line also.
Pro-FWD has evolved into an incredible class. We are going quicker and faster than we ever have and at the same time are winning or losing races by mere bumpers. All of us in the class have aspired to have this and now we are there. Amazingly enough, all of the drivers are closer than ever as friends and are an honorable group of guys. Marty is truly a class act and the rivalry I have with him now is something I know we will talk about when we are old and gray. It's starting to get fun crushing each other's dreams. Gary, Jason, Brian, GM is lucky to have you guys and I respect and enjoy our competition and the class you guys help build. Chris, you have one of the biggest hearts in this sport. For the amount of time, energy and money your team puts in, you guys could have gone to PowerAde, but instead you guys are where you love to be and I know we will be boxing it out more in the future....... but first you have to help me out with GM.
To our team, Rommel, Sav, Derek, Doug, Curt, Mark and the rest of the boys that have helped out at the races, you guys are the best team anyone could ask for. We pay you with cigarettes, Wawa food, shove all you guys in one hotel room and you still love to be part of the family even when Ron is a nut sometimes.
To our sponsors, Mazdaspeed, Nitto Tires, Fujita Competition Air Intakes, Steen Chassis, Golden Eagle, Tial, Arias, Burns, Clutchmasters, IMPO Performance, Motec, Garrett, SCE, Web Cams, BC, Modern Image, RC, Peterson Fluid Systems and A1 Technologies thank you for believing in us and being part of our family.
Now that I am exhausted, I am going to go over some data logs and figure out how to also go 200mph, seems like the only thing I'm missing. We are hungrier now more than ever!
Oh, If this is Sheila, the Brand Manager of Scion, It's great to see you post here on honda-tech. Your input is much respected and shows how much visibility Sport Compact Drag Racing is getting. I know our industry is better because you and Scion are here and I thank you for that.
Finally, thanks again to all of you who believe in us and long live honda-tech!
Peace,
Ed B.
