Default how much $ am i looking at for SV mods?

I have a problem with my insurance being very high. im 22 i have one accident and no tickets but for some reason its much higher for me then other people my age or younger with worse records then me. i really dont want to get in to this though.

so after finding out that i can get full coverage on an 05' sv for $30/month im hooked! ill prob be selling my 919 as soon as i get to england and on my way to the dealer shortly after.

I dont mind spending money on the bike but i dont know enough about the bike to really do anything. i understand for the forks people are keeping stock and re-valving with new springs. Others are swapping out with GSXR forks. if i went that route what all would i need? will i need a new triple tree or are they the same size forks? what about the rear shock?

I had a naked '03 SV650. My planned mods were the Yoshi Tri-oval exhaust, K&N (gotta have a K&N, of course...lol), Power Commander, and SV650S handlebars. Lowers the bars about an inch if I remember correctly, which definitely helps with the weight distribution and transfer. But I am gonna tell you, get an "S" model if you can, cuz riding a naked bike definitely has it's downsides.

IIRC, the ZX10R shock swaps to the SV.

I concur. He has, hands down, the best SV650 I have ever seen (other than the lack of fairings ).

(subliminal message to rdblkSV650S : get fairings!!!! : end message.)

haha, i'm not sure about the fairings thing, but between my buddy and me i've learned quite a bit about SVs.
There's all the info you'd ever need to know about SVs on svrider.com.
But as far as suspension goes you can respring and oil the stock forks and enjoy the new stiffness, but there's no adjustability. You can buy emulators and do a bunch of crap and what not and still not be as good as a set of GSXR forks. Not to mention with GSXR forks you get upgraded brakes. Stock SV brakes are 2 pot with 290mm rotors. Most GSXR forks give you at least 4 pot with 300mm rotors. I've got 01 GSXR 750 forks which means i've got 320mm rotors and 4 pot brakes. I'm also running an RC51 master cylinder.
There's plenty of information about this on SV rider. But, if you're sticking with a second gen SV what you'll need for a GSXR conversion are as follows:
GSXR
Forks
triples
axel
wheel/rotors
fender
clip ons

and you need a way to read the speed off of the front wheel. Once upon a time there was a guy that made a kit for this but he's been too busy as of late and doesn't make them anymore. I ended up sourcing all of the parts for his kit individually and piecing it together. But, you need a hall effect sensor, 4 magnets, and a way to mount all of them. Again, plenty of info on svrider.com.

As a price range, you should be able to piece together, or buy as a whole, an entire GSXR front end for around $600. Then once it's installed you can turn around and sell most of your stock pieces for about the same, so you pretty much brake even.
The SV master cylinder will work with GSXR brakes, as will the brake lines. Another upgrade you can do is an 00-01 RC51 master cylinder. Uses the same style brake lines, but is a 19mm master cylinder.

SVrider.com has a list of the shocks that work and what weights they're good for.
Personally i have a zx10r rear shock, and it's pretty stiff for me (175lbs). You have to dremel away a corner of the battery box to allow room for the shock resevoir, and then the battery just kind of rests on top of it. It works.

I probably spent about $1200 getting parts ready for my SV and then sold about $6-700 worth of stuff. But i turned around and put it right back in to the bike.

Out of all of the things you can do to an SV i would say the suspension is the best mod. I also noticed that de-snorkeling the airbox made a pretty big difference, for me at least.

I'm going to stop blabbing now, but if you have any questions feel free to PM me.

i've got a +2 setup for my rear sprocket. I like it, i don't know if i would go any shorter. First gear is still useful. The front end gets light in first and second gear. It's just awesome. And i still get 50mpg on the freeway.

at least for 99-02 SV's, the 03-04 636 shock is a good fit, minus some trimming of the battery box like the 10r shock. I was going to install it in my SV..... but I got an Ohlins instead

The 636 shock is pretty stiff on the second gens. I've heard it's great on the first gens. But it's got a 540 spring rate and on the second gens, i'm feeling it. I weigh 175lbs before gear and the shock is too stiff for me. What i do like about it, and the zx10 shock is that it is slightly longer than stock, raising the rear ride height about 10mm.
Here's a run down of different shocks and their weights and lengths

rdblcksv650s is spreading sv fever like gonorrhea. but really, he should be a salesman for suzuki, just email suzuki copies of all the threads where you posted pics of your bike and all the responses saying "sv is my next bike" to get your commission. brian*e30, any details on price for that 636 shock? to the op, i have about $2000 in parts for my sv sitting in my garage begging to be installed(school wont give me any time to install). after selling my r6, i used that money to buy my sv and all the parts and have just about broken even so yay for sv being a cheap bike with relativly cheap parts.
