I have a B18C1 block and a B16 head in my 2000 Si. It just died the other day. Sounded like a diesel truck. I cut open my oil filter and found a bunch of copper colored metal bits. If I have to tear it all apart I would like to add some more stuff in the hard to get to spots while it is all apart. Do I just need the type R pistons and cams??????

 

It means getting an actual Type R head, and putting it on a standard B16 or B18 Bottom end.

no. a poormans R would be any b16 head on a b18c block with itr internals.

 

I have yet to see one person do a correct poor mans type R. Everyone just thinks is you throw the b16 head on the b18c block you got type r numbers. I had to switch EVERYTHING out, but it was def worth it.

 

i have a b16 head on a b18 block. i had to use aftermarket arp head studs. and other than that motor is stock.( not mentioning the obvious had to tap a oil line in.) i boosted the motor and it runs great.

 

b16 head on a gsr motor.

If you want to go into more detail you can swap on ctr or ITR internals and raise compression.

But i'd opt for lower compression so boosting is easier and safer.

For what it costs to do a poor man's R you can boost a gsr.

 

I just finished blueprinting my main bearings over the weekend. Just waiting to switch over my P30 pistons on the gsr rods. I may try and get them stress relieved and shot peened during the process.
Also am going to try something different to get the catchcan going. I will be removing all pcv items.

A true poormans isn't really for a poor man.

B18c1 block with P73 usdm or jdm pistons or you can use PR3's. I opted for the jdm P30's for the highest compression ratio with oem pistons.
Steve at HMO took care of it. P30 pistons with wrist pins and oem rings for like 265.00 or so.
New oem bearings from len plus waterpump, timing belt, tensioner all together was around 400.00
I have a type r head that will be getting supertech flat-faced valves, springs and retainer. PerformanceCloseout in the sponsor section.
Don't know what cams yet, I sold my 01 ITR cams so maybe skunk2 pro1 or 2's.

But to go poor b18c1 block with a b16 head. Although you only get about a 10.2:1 ratio instead of ITR 11.0:1.

Also need the C1 headgasket and timing belt and head studs. I am using golden eagle head studs as I have had good results in the past with them.

My goal is around 11.8:1 compression ratio and shooting for 200 whp. Hopefully higher but if not then I will survive.
Stock bore 81mm on 91 pump gas. Will probably have my P72 chipped to run knock sensor. Don't think the P28 will make this one.

 

that pretty similar to my current setup. with a good inatke system and header you should do alright.

 

Wow, instead of a trueman's R I would have just spend the extra $$$ for the ITR motor.

 

If you already have the supplies for the "poormans type r" might as well do it, raise the cr with ITR pistons, or CTR piston, but may require the use of higher octane fuel like 93 or 101 not sure, ITR or CTR valvetrain. Port and polish the head if its not assembled yet to the block. Either ITR tranny or b16 tranny, sell your gsr tranny for either one so you have a much closer gear ratio. Get a chipped ecu not sure which ecu's people are using for the poorman's R, don't forget about tuning, go with Hondata

I just dida a type R kinda setup because I had everything laying around after I blew up my b20

 

I had the gsr block laying around. Needed new rings so got pistons at same time. Allmotor FTW.
I basically traded my pre-obd b16 head for a 02 type r head that was purchased from the factory and not off a production vehicle.
I have less than 2200.00 in the longblock as it sits right now. I still need cams though.

For 2500 or so I have an *** load of new parts. Not a used motor. Way cheaper than a 4500.00 ITR motor.

I already have a Y21 with oem lsd tranny as well that will get a quaiffe lsd with ITR 4.7 FD when money permits.
Plus better valvetrain and cams than the ITRs.

I came out alright but I prefer to call this the not-so-poor-mans-R build.

I wish I would have just gone H2B but my sig shows that I do not have a stable job anymore so I had to build this and get my car moving.

more torque from any of the b18's.

don't have to rev as high to get as much power.

Less choppy power band.

 

im not sure what the initial cost is gsr vs ls vtec but i alread had a b16 motor in my car and a ls block is cheaper than a b16 block.at least it is here. lol

What he is reffering to is a poor man's CTR motor, and you are talking about a poor man's ITR.




And I do realize that the B16B and the B18C use the same block.
