cut crossmember???
hey guys just turboed my crx and had to cut a chunk of the crossmember so that my downpipe could fit. just wanted to know if this it safe or not....i've searched around and found nothing really...someone did tell me that the crx si crossmembers are so big that it wouldn't matter, but then again i also heard that if i dyno or take it to the tracks it might snap in half?...it's cut about a inch in and about 2 to 3 inches across. just wanted some more opinions on this thanks.
ha... i have mine cut but its also supported with metal welded in where it was cut (boxed)
its not safe, how much did you cut
i would recommend buying aftermarket subframe (not from ebay)
picture of butcher?

Here's what my crossmember looked like after I cut and hammered it down to fit my header years ago. Used it for half a season of AutoXing and street use...

okay i dont have a pic i will try to post one but it's not as big the one pictured in EF_LSVtec's picture, maybe about half that size and it's not cut in as much either.

Box it in and you'll be golden. They're big and beefy for a reason. The front end of an ef is soooo flimsy. My car had been in a minor fender bender at some point in its life and I couldn't get my motor mounts to line up, so I simply loosened the xmember and pulled the two sides together with a tiedown and with minimal force I made up the .5" I needed.
Either box it in or get an aftermarket xmember.

I try to not be a "hater", but this stuff drives me crazy!
You spent money on a turbo (to make the car faster) and then do this to your cross-member.
You could also make the car lighter by removing the brakes.
Buy a quality cross-member!!
(sorry, I'm old and certain stuff drives me over the top)

The most I ever did was hammer back the lip, that's it..you people cutting **** like that are crazy! Just think about what a crossmember is there for and what's attatched to it before you do stupid **** like that

You have to realize that picture is over 7 years old...at the time I was doing the swap in my garage, we just hammered and cut the crossmember without even measuring because we were simply eager to get the swap done. How many times have you done foolish things without even thinking of the consequence? Lucky for me, the crossmember held for a while until I eventually replaced it with an aftermarket one. If you're broke and excited to get your car rolling, you just get it done...no matter what

A comment like this is totally irresponsible! You are basically condoning driving a car that is unsafe.
I understand that people that have limited funds may not be able to keep up on safety related items, but this is an individual that had the money to buy the turbo.
