Cleaning EGR port
ok guys, i have a question...I have no clue about working on cars, but im a very quick learner and can follow directions or pictures. i just bought a 2002 v-tec honda accord and the check engine light was on so i did a diag. test. It said the EGR port needed to be cleaned. I was looking around to see if i would be able to do it myself. one, can u just take off the plate covering the ports and clean them? If so, what do you recommend me cleaning them with? Second, does anyone have a detailed explanation on how to do it with pics? Its my fiance's car and i really dont want to spead a whole lot of money. please help!!!!

thats for a 5th gen accord but it should be about the same for your model accord and yes you just take the plate off..clean it with carb cleaner and alittle metal brush of somesort..thats what i did anyways worked awesome

I have a V-6. Also, besides the 4 holes are there any tubes i need to clean out? how long does this take...From the pics it doesn't seem like it takes long.
Cleaning the 2002 Accord EGR port is somewhat different than the 5th gen Accord. You may want to first check with Honda if this is covered under their extended emissions warranty.

ok, well, since you have a V6 that link above isn't going to be much help since thats for the 94-97 4cyl engines and the V6 egr cleaning is different.
After some searching, which the egr is a common question and there is a lot of topic returns when you search the archives of just Accord forum
just search for EGR and you'll see what I mean, I found this...

Now that is instructions on a warranty extension but it does show you how to clean the egr ports of the V6 engine.
EDIT:
Damn... tech8 and I posted at the same time, he beat to it though

X2... Is that a bad thing to have that carbon gunk fall into the manifold runners?
I assume the small amount that does fall into it would just be incinerated in the combustion chambers. It's probably nothing more than a light snack for the engine to munch on. Perhaps I'll just put the vacuum cleaner nozzle right there next to the spot that I'm drilling to suck up the crap that gets knocked off.

well think of it this way..the carbon build up that is in those holes came from down in there so how would it hurt it?..that where it came from so its not going to hurt anything
Man, yall are a TON of help.... OK, i checked out the car yesterday and i see the four covers im supposed to take off that are on top of the manifold. I'm only worried that once i get the intake manifold off and i clean out the port on the bottom that i wont be able to get it back in the car. Once its out is it hard to get back in?
I've never taken the intake manifold off on a V6 Accord but I can't imagine it's going to be any harder than removing it, probably easier to install than it is to remove because you already know how it all came apart and that. Make sure you use new gaskets when re-installing everything.
ok, so heres the deal. my fiance took the car to the dealership to get a alignment and tire pluged and they were like you need to replace the egr plugs. Where are the plugs? are they hard to fix? What would happen if i just cleaned out the port and kept the plugs? HELP!!!!!
Check this thread link below. Accord99v6 did a good tutorial with pictures on solving the egr problem with minimal dismantling. Also has TSB link with info on torque spec of bolts etc.
