Noob to the Honda World ...
Sup everyone, new forum member here. I know how all the car forum stuff works .. Post in the right forum .. Search before you post but I can't seem to find what I'm looking for ...
Little information about myself: I own a 2006 Subaru WRX STi Black. Cobb Stage 2 with F&R Whiteline Sway bars and Kartbot endlinks. Type RA-R Grill mod with 10% tint and blacked out headlights.
Well since gas prices are raising, I wanted to purchase some kind of cheap older car that had great gas mileage stock while has after-market potential. The first thing that came to my mind was the Honda CRX. I've been doing a bit of research and it seems that the CRX has a problem with rusting and should do a leakdown and pressure testing. If I'm looking for good gas mileage CRX, Should I be looking for an HF? What are the differences in an HF and an Si?
Once I get a hold of a CRX, should I think about swapping out a more reliable engine and transmission?
thanks a lot for your help fellas!
P.S. I'll post pics of the STi soon.

crx hf is the pure gas mileage car.. 8 valves instead of 16, but with multi point fuel injection, which you want. the si civic and crx both have multipoint and a 16 valve head. all the rest have dual point, which you should avoid like compressor surge on your STI.. if you want the most upgrade potential possible.. then the si is the way to go because of mpfi, and a trans with 4.25 final drive stock. then you could do a head swap for vtec, or do a low boost setup fairly safely on the stock block. if you feel the need to swap engines, then you can go b series for about 3 grand to 5 grand, or k series for 10 grand and destroy your sti with the crx . and did i mention the bonus of being able to change your "new" honda's spark plugs without spending 15 hours and needing to yank the engine.. i think youll like that part.. ~sarcasm~
seriously though.. to aviod headache, just go with a crx or civic si. the hf you have to swap to do anything with, but atleast youll have mpfi and the lightest of all the chassis. si hatchbacks are probably the most common out of the 2 options for si trim.. and it will still be a fun car to drive with the 4.25 final.
welcome to HT..

lol .. Well I know that the CRX has potential when it comes to drag and Money:power ratio but I just love my Subbie.
I don't street race at all, I'd like to see a CRX keep up in the twisties when it's raining or snowing >.>
I've heard that you could drop a K20, which is a RSX Engine, for about 10 grand, but what's the point of dropping so much money into a car if I'm trying to find a gas friendly car?
If you guys can think of a cheap car with great gas mileage and has potential let me know!
Thanks for the basic info sanimalp!

Other than rust issues; what else should I be looking for? Should I worry about the transmission at all?
Also, are there any mods that can increase MPG? I know it may seem redundant because an increase in HP should decrease in MPG, but my STi actually gained MPG when I reflashed the chip and put a full 3" TBE in it. I don't know how but it just did.

if you want to talk about saving gas go to http://www.gassavers.org there is nothing that's unreliable about a crx stock motor. hf gets about 50-55mpg, i have an hf 5th gear in my si- i average about 45 on the highway with a 4.02 ex final drive and a supercharger.
siray, pmed....
basically, either model you get, it will get good gas mileage! its a honda! lol. if you really want gas mileage, but barely any power, then get an hf, if you want power and still good mileage, get an si, stay away from the dx and std (if ya get a hatch..)

si has a sunroof, make sure it works and stuff, lift rear interior and smell for mold around the spare tire and look for water in tail lights. i wouldnt not buy a car over these things, but try and use them against the seller to reduce price.
