Default Air conditioning compressor shuts off

I have a 1989 Prelude that I had the AC fixed (recharge, new seals, used compressor) a few years ago. It still blows cold air but the compressor shuts down frequently and the little red light comes on that is embedded in the AC button. What kind of sensor is telling the compressor to shut down? What is it measuring? (pressure, temp.?) Where is it located? Is there any way I can override or otherwise cause the sensor to not send an out of range signal?

This is probably the last summer I will own the car. I'm just trying to get through one last summer. If I am able to override the sensor and I burn up the compressor then so be it.

Typically if I shut the AC off and turn it back on the compressor will run again for a few seconds and then will shut off again. After the third time it gets shut off, it stays off. I guess the computer says 3 strikes you're out. I then have to turn the car off and restart to get the compressor to run again. If I do this enough times eventually the compressor will stay on and I get good AC performance.

Thanks for any help.
