Default Which is better?

Short Ram or Cold Air intake?

What are the pros and cons of each? What are good brands for each? AEM?

well, i got a short ram intake in my car right now, but i suggest you get a cold air intake (CAI) because with a cold air intake you are getting all the cold air from the bottom were the cold fresh air is, and a short ram intake is just sucking up all the hot air in the engine bay

CAI helps low end and SRI helps top end..either way your not going to realize much of a difference considering you will probably can a total of 2HP...the only difference is your car will be louder..anyways if you do decide to go with the CAI make sure you get a by pass valve..I myself like the SRI just because you dont have to worry about water getting sucked up into it and i love the sound of it more than a CAI..ive owned both and I like the SRI much better..but like i said HP gains are very very minimal and you prob wont notice a difference other than the sound.

colder air or not your not going to see a difference in HP...its sucking in the same air just because its lower doesnt mean its going to be sucking in a massive amount of cool air and make your car go faster...cool air or warm air your HP gains will be the same..2 or 3HP at the max

It's really up to you on how you want to go, SRI or CAI. You won't really see a HP gain like lowered94accord said, you're just going to notice a sound difference. Just keep in mind, if you live in a wet area think about a SRI, where as if you live in a hot dry area think about a CAI. Also get a bypass valve just incase Right now i have a $30 eBay special SRI. Haven't really noticed a HP gain, but it gets pretty loud between 4-6 RPM. I'm thinking of switching to an AEM SRI soon.

Good brands? I think AEM, Injen, and Weapon R are the 3 popular brand names out there right now.

I've read from AEM's own site that bypass valves are only necessary if the intake tube can become completely submerged, not splashed or damp. My car is stock height, which means that the throat of the intake tube is riding a good 8+ inches above ground. I don't get puddles that savage around here, so I'm saving my $50.

You never know. It depends on where you live. Like where I live when we get rain it pretty much floods every time.

yea, there was a post on focusfanatics.com about some guy who hydrolocked his zx3 with a cai. I aslo live in NY and i have a SRI because of the winter.

EDIT

Id buy an Ebay intake and then just buy a K&N filter to replace the shitty one on the ebay intake.

do you think the inside of your engine is cold?...pulling hot air into your engine isnt going to hurt anything and anyways..how much cooler is the air from a cold air intake going to be?..not much cooler theres hot air all around your car when you drive not just right beside your motor...but I mean its up to you...im not being mean im just saying..if hot air getting pulled into your motor was bad why would they make SRI...besides it will be inthe same spot as your stock intake..so whats the difference?

search on here for diy cold air intake or something like that, xluben posted it, well i tried it* and to my surprise, i felt a difference, throughout the whole rpm range, and a niiice sound at WOT

i reverted to stock cuz i quit driving like a ricer and dont need the extra hp/tq and had a suspision i was using more fuel b/c the ecu compensates for colder air with more fuel

that and bein scared to go thru puddles in parking lots

*(except for cutting the mini snorkel on the big snorkel, you'll see what im talking about if you read the write-up )

hope this helps

If I was him I would stick to buying one..even an ebay intake is going to be better than that..not to mention you have that huge area for water to get sucked in

you could always use some good ol elbow grease and make you a heat shield for your engine bay and create a funnel of sorts to re-direct air into the area under your SRI, thats what i'm doing

SRI are typically louder than cold air's. CAI are better Horsepower typically, but you also endanger yourself if you are lowered without a by pass valve with hydrolocking. Best of both worlds I would think is the Weapon-R Secret Weapon Intake. That's what I have. Research it.

they make short rams because they are cheaper to make than the full cai system but still have the advantage of a reusable filter.

it works just as well and you dont have to worry about hydrolock, which sucks major huevos, but its all up to you and what you're comfy with
