ok so i am making a small shop press and i need to bolt together some metal for it. basically i wanna know what bolt grade i should use thats gonna be able to withstand the pressure of a 4 ton bottle jack. oh and dont suggest welding it cuz i dont have access to a welder nor do i know how to weld.

I think I'd use a 12.9 bolt.

 

well just get the highest you can. grade 8 SAE or 12.9 metric.

 

Depends on how you are loading them, how many you are applying load to, member stiffness, size, thread pitch, etc.

No point in spending a fortune on a few high grade fasteners when simply adding a fastener or two could allow you to use cheap grade 5 stuff.
