is it okay to drive with a bad rear wheel bearing? the noise is not loud but you can hear it. if it actually locks up, what happens? (never seen it) its an ek with gsr disk conversion and i do quite alot of hwy driving.

*update* i'm trying to find the part but i dont know if ABS makes a difference. I dont have ABS. the part says ABS on it...are they all the same, can i still use it?

well i dont know too much but my buddy rode on a bad wheel bearing for 2 weeks or so...i'd try to replace it asap though....go to the junk yard, thats where my homie got his new bearing from....

It won't lock up, it will separate.

Which means the wheel hub will no longer be attached to the spindle on the trailing arm.

Which means you're in for a world of hurt if you're traveling on the highway at speed when your wheel comes off.

 

Wheel bearings are important. Replace it when it goes bad please. If it locks up you lose control of your car. Some people say your wheel could fall off. I'm not too sure on that one but I wouldn't take the chance.

 

Wheel won't fall off. The 32mm nut is holding it. It make driving at high speed more differcult and not safe.

Please do fix it asap.

 

i drove with a bad wheel bearing for arleast 6 weeks.. u will feel it when its really bad..

 

once i went to this car meet with my friend and his car had a bad wheel bearing. it progressively got worst and worst after each turn, bump, scrape, etc. scary ****

 

just get it replaced. its not that hard, you need the right tools or if you can find a spindle/hub for really cheap with good bearings you can swap that over. thats what i did with my friends EG because he got into an accident.

 

what does a bad bearing feel or sound and feel like? Is it consistant noise and vibration or just when you're on the gas climbing rpm's quickly?

I have a ticking/knocking sound that I feel through my steering wheel. More ticks and vibration when turning right. Is this a sign of a bad bearing?

More likely a bad CV joint/axle. Check your CV boots to make sure they are all intact. How long have the axles been in the car? Is there any play in the front wheels?

lol. naw i meant like is it okay to drive it for a while before i could get it fixed. not hwy just city. i've seen some of the diy threads and it looks easy. i just dont have the funds at the moment. but thanks guys for the input. i appreciate it!

 

yes, u can drive on it for alittle while. how many miles do u drive a day.

10-15 miles a day only. w/ a highest speed of 40.

 

Trying to put safe limitations on exactly how much and how fast is pointless... No two situations are gonna be exactly the same. I had a front wheel bearing that was on it's way out. I started hearing noise on a Thursday evening on my way home from work and didn't know exactly what I was dealing with. Friday I drove to work and just tryed to pinpoint what I was dealing with. I didn't drive much over the weekend, instead I just spent a lot of time on the computer trying to research and decided to go have it repaired Monday morning. I am very glad I did. When I got the bad bearing back the inner housing was missing a huge chunk out of it and the bearings were exposed. I have absolutely no I idea where the big missing piece went. Scary stuff man. The noise went from bad to terrifying by the time I drove it to get fixed Monday. 3 days worth of driving. It's one thing I wouldn't mess with. I don't know exactly what the end result would have been had I chose to drive on it more but I'm pretty sure that it wouldn't have been good.

 

if its a wheel bearing ur click click click well turn into a KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK than a not good situation might occur... Although 10 miles a day at under 40mph u "should" be fine until u can get it fixed.. nobody here can tell how bad it is just by explanation but if your lucky ull have it fixed before it breaks...

 

Just fix it already.

 

trying to get it fix. i'm reading that if your only changing the bearing then you need the shop to press the old one out and new one in. but if your changing both the hub and wheel bearing, is the "press" step still needed?

 

No as long as the hub has the bearing

 

If you change the hub you don't need to press the bearing out, if the hub come with it.

 

fix it soon befor you get more problem like ball joint, aliment, tire, brake cali, ect.... get it fix now or spend more money to fix everything later.

 

I believe Honda sells the rear hub as one unit with new bearing spindle, wheel studs, etc... that is what I did in the past when the rear one went bad, easier to just replace the whole thing.

They do and yes, it is easier.

 

Infact I just did mine. (Made a write-up on it somewhere if you do a search) You HAVE to replace the entire hub/bearing assembly. You can't just replace the bearings even if you can press the old ones out.

It's for a DX civic with drum brakes but all that changes is having to take off your rotor instead of drum. Hope it helps.

 

I don't know if it's different for the back but on my front wheel bearing they just replaced the wheel bearing and that is it.

replacing the front and rear wheel bearings is a totally different process by the way. yes you can replace the front bearing without buying the whole spindle hub assembly. it would cost alot more to buy all of that together when you can buy just the front wheel bearing, which is alot cheaper then the rear wheel bearing and spindle. the problem is pressing it in and out. the cheapest method would be to remove the hub and spindle and take it to a shop, but if you bring the car to a shop and let them do it, your lookin at 2.5 hours of labor, 4 hours for both (front) plus parts.
