Default Transmission grinding on deceleration

Trying to narrow down an issue here: My trans makes a grinding / rubbing sound when decelerating at low speeds and around 4K or so only in 5th gear. Wondering if anyone can help me pinpoint the issue. I searched through the archives and recent threads and came up with these possible explanataions, but there was nothing there that hasn't been taken care of recently.

Bad wheel bearings: both were just replaced this week along with the hubs.
Bad IS Bearing: replaced last summer when I replaced the clutch
Bad shaft bearings in the trans: replaced last year, did a mild rebuild.

Even though my trans has ~274K on it, the synchros, sleeves and gears all looked great when I did the rebuild. One thing I'm kicking myself for is not really looking at the differential.

I may be answering my own question here, but could this be realted to a bad difff bearing or the diff rubbing against the case? Your input, as always, is appreciated.

i would have to say that your diff would be the most likely cause. my diff is about to go in my car, and it has about 230k on it.. they seem to be the weak link in our transmissions.

Yeah, I was afraid of that. Could it just be the bearing or is the whole thing going to go?

Bumping again for some advice.

I can order new bearings for the diff and replace them (rather not, diff has 273K on it ) or pick up a used trans from somebody. The only problem with the used trans is he says that it whines in 1st, 3rd and 5th. I've searched around on this with no results. I would easily be able to tear down the other trans since it's out of the car already and would prefer to do that if it's something simple.

I could really use some advice on this one. Thanks!

That's what I'm trying to figure out.

The trans whines / whirs in every gear but grumbles and makes a rubbing noise on deceleration. I think it's the diff bearings.

You've def got bad bearing(s) in ur trans. You said that it did it on the 5th gear consistently, then its likely that one is bad. Did you replace the pilot bearing when you did the clutch as well?

I suggest replacing ALL bearings inside a transmission when one goes bad because that always spreads crap all around inside the tranny and that then damages other bearings and parts, and can be hard to clean out. Sometimes even if you manage to clean it all up, the damage is done and the bearings and the races will make more debris due to the previous damage and mess other stuff up.

Did you also blow out all the oil passages in the shafts? When I did mine, there was a TON of crap in there including metal debris. I was surprised how much was in there because it looked dimpled and like it was not a oil passage, just a unfinished cast spot. And this was from a tranny with bearings that were fine, maybe a bit old and on their way out. Did the rebuild due to grinding synchros.

Full bearing kit from gearspeed aint that bad, a couple hundred bucks, but well worth it.

Thanks for the reply. I think I have my answer. The pilot bearing needs to be changed along with the two for the differential. I did change the magnet and oil guide and replace the bearings for the main and countershafts last summer, just didn't think about the differential

Anybody have any explanation for why a trans would whine only when in 1st, 3rd or 5th?

Because those bearings are bad. That only happens when that particular gearset is spinning which rotates the bad bearings thus making the noise. When that gear is NOT selected, it's not under power so it shuts up then as it spins down. It's possible that the shaft bearings could be bad and causing this but I don't feel like trying to figure out which gears are freewheeling on what shaft.

Just take it apart and inspect all of the bearings.
