Viper alarm/starter kill
My friend and I were messing around w/ his car (98 teg).. it has a Viper 550 alarm and he forgot to shut off the dome light so it drained the battery... his alarm was armed.. but w/ the dome light on.. the battery got drained.... when we tried to start it.. it made a click and wouldnt turn over.. and all the dash/CE lights dimmed... I jump started his car w/ my car and we took the car on a spin on the highway to let it charge up... after that his alarm would not respond... we first noticed by the lack of the ignition controlled door locks... after driving around for a good 30 minutes to let his battery charge back up... we drove back home and tried to arm/disarm the alarm w/ the remote.. nothing.. it was as if the alarm was dead...
tried starting up his car after driving it around.. and it started right up.... however the alarm was dead.. it wouldnt respond to the remote nothing.. I unplugged the fuse for the power and plugged it back in and the siren kinda made a "click" (not a chirp).. then everything was back to normal.. it would arm.. .disarm.. lock doors, sound the siren.. shock sensor worked.. etc... but thats pretty dumb how if the battery drains (while the alarm was armed).. when its powered back up (jump started) it doesnt remember the alarm was armed and the starter kill doesnt work anymore..
so is the brain fried? did the installer hook it up wrong? cuz if the battery is drained.. (even when alarm was armed) when u charge the batt back up.. it doesnt have starter kill.. I had to pull the fuse to reset it or whatever.. thats pretty dumb .. cuz cant a theif just drain the batt or something.. then disarm the starter kill?

we didn't install it.. it was installed by some car audio/alarm shop that is now out of business.. so do you know what it wrong w/ it? thanks.. or are you saying it messed up because we let the battery drain?

its a fail safe, the starter kill works off a relay that interupts the starter wire from the key,the way it works is when it gets a negative siganl from the alarm and power it switchs the relay to a open circuit.so if your alarm dies on you in the middle of no where, the car will still start.who knows why its not working after you got the battery recharged, are you sure it worked before the battery went dead,it may have never been hooked up before, arm the alarm, then see if the car starts,if it does then it more than likely was never even hooked up to begin with,it all works off of a relay and those are pretty rare to just fial for no reason.
i think i read in the manual that it needed to be resynced with the alarm remote (because the car died.) it has a few sets of codes that gets changed everytime you activate the alarm. it is used to prevent code-grabbing.

yeah the starter kill worked before the battery was drained.. and the alarm and starter kill worked after we recharged the battery ... what I was saying was.. if WHILE the alarm was armed.. then power is gone (battery drained) then u reconnect it (jumped it w/ my car) and powered the car.. then the alarm doesnt work anymore until you reset and pull a fuse.. thats pretty dumb since a theif can just drain his battery .. then reset the alarm.. and not have to deal w/ starter kill right?
I guess since civic typeNos says its a safety feature.. i guess thats just how it was designed..b ut that doesnt sound very secure to me...

cool thanks.. well this isnt my car.. so I dont know if he wants to do that (I dont see why not)... but we were just wondering if the alarm shop installed it wrong.. or its supposed to be like that.. either way.. nothing he can do since the shop went out of business.. but the alarm seems to be working OK after we reconnected power and pulled the fuse/power to the alarm and not it works and when its armed.. and u turn the ignition key.. it doesnt start.. so it seems to be working normal..
I alredy have several manual kills on my own car that are independant of the alarm, along w/ an alarm w/ multi point immobilization, batt back up, hood lock, hood pin switch, pager, prox, shock/impact and tilt sensor.. and also have ultra club on the steering wheel and autolock on the clutch.. gotta watch out for them tow trucks...
