The helmet that doesn't fit your head (or whomever's head) well is crap. That, is most important.

my hjc carbon fiber ac-12 is great. wind noise is minimal but present, it weighs no more than 3 lbs or so, has awesome "graphics" because carbon fiber is oh so sexy, and cost me about 350 shipped.
well i think some wind noise is gunna always be present. but in the description it says it has a featur to minimize wind noise. as long as they are trying lol

only reason i dont like hjc that much is because they dont fit my head. I bought one last season when i bought my bike, it was just a cheap good helmet. I crashed with it in the woods at like 40mph, saved my *** there. But it began to give me very bad headaches from poor fitment, not to mention i got it too big as well. I ended up getting the shoei rf1000 in a sweet matte black design, and the hjc is probably going to be the helmet i use for the track with my car.

hah... hah... hahahaha
right...
but then again, like marmalade said, if it doesn't fit properly then it's useless.

My HJC saved my life, I wrecked going about 55-60mph and smacked my head on the street? Can't be that bad eh.
Needless to say after my first wreck my next helmet was an Arai.
The HJC I had no complaints about, but once I started to ride with the Arai its like night and day (a.k.a bonkin a fat girl vs a fine *** skinny girl) They both give ya what ya need a good lay a.k.a protection just your paying for the added features; nice ****, legs, and shaved puss...aka more comfortable, customer service, name brand, etc.
ok that was dumb...its sunday 80 degrees outside and im stuck at work doing IT ****....can ya tell im bored...

so where do i start?
you have company A that has a limited budget to make helmets that will meet safety standards, quality control, research and development, cost of materials, etc. all with the goal of making a cheap, affordable helmet for the masses.
company B on the otherhand, is not overly concerned with a budget to make a helmet that will meet AND far exceed safety standards, superb quality control, research and development that never ends, uses the best materials available, etc. even the employees feel privileged to be a part of this company and take pride in every aspect, down to the guy that will spend hours making sure that he paints the lines for the parking stall so they are absolutely perfect.
it's just common sense, like they say... $50 helmet for a $50 head.
sure, you do pay considerably more for a shoei, arai, suomy, etc. because of the name brand, graphics, light weight, comfort, and so on. but you know what? there's a reason why they've earned such a reputation in the first place.
i don't care if a helmet saved you in a 15mph crash or a 150mph crash, that doesn't mean squat. it doesn't explain how much abuse the helmet actually took and how much more it could've taken.
that goes for all aspects of protective gear. just because a glove is a "race" glove doesn't mean it's just as good as the next pair of gloves. read some UK bike magazines, they've always got awesome gear testing. sometimes it is the other way around though, they had a $15 gloves (i think they were regular welding gloves) that tested better than most gloves on the market. one that i read that i found hilarious... the armor in a frank thomas jacket tested WORSE than a ham sandwich as far as absorbing and transfering impact.

I do all the time, I used to live in england when i was a teenager.
And I spent last summer (4 months over there)
I was saying a general statment that HJCs can not be all crap - 1 if they are DOT and SNELL approved so obviously they pass inspection and regulations. and 2, first hand experience i would of died or had serious head injury without it.
But yes, arai and so on are better overall in many categories just like everthing else you get what you pay for. That is why i baught an arai.

Please explain to me exactly how they exceed regulations? Even if that were true, would it really be a good thing? Do you know anything about how they test helmets? Would it surprise you to know that the cheaper helmets can actually be safer in some of the most common crash situations?
