Default 89 Octane in Si?

yeah my sister is buying an si tomorrow.. n i just wanted to know if it would be bad for her to put 89 in instead of 91... since 91 is 4 bucks.. she doesnt drive hard or anything she always shifts before 5k and she drives reall conservatively if it matters.. i know honda recommends 91 but i just wanted to know if anyone has used 89

thanks

Tell her not to go the cheap way..if she wants a sporty car you need to pay the money to make it work right. If she drives extremely conservatively why doesn't she just get an EX with a Honda bodykit? Otherwise it sounds kind of poser-ish.

This car is a waste of money if she drives extremely conservatively. In fact, you aren't even driving the car, per say, if you shift before 5k. Go with an EX if gas is too expensive, and you won't even be driving the SI it was meant to.

you have to use 91 octane, due to the high compression 11.1 of the k20z3 anything less and you increase the chance of detonation.

Detonation = blown motors.

Yes, it is a bad idea, in my opinion. The engine is tuned for 91 Octane. The ECU will recognize a lower octane fuel and will retard the performance accordingly. Personally, I feel that defeats the purpose of getting an SI.

Keep in mind, this motor runs a higher compression than most cars (11.3 to 1 or something). Using a lower octane fuel increases the risk of detonation. Detonation is bad.

The SI is designed for 91 or above. You wanted to run 89, then you should re-think getting an SI and maybe get a LX or something.
