Whats the difference?

EJs as a whole are not watered down versions in comparision to EKs as a whole. For example, the EK2 gets a 1.3L. At least our EJs all have 1.6Ls.
Look at the chassis code list linked in my sig. The 6th gen Civics range from EJ6 to EN1.
Your friend might be confusing the term "EK" with actual chassis codes though. People use the term "EK" to denote a car as being a 6th generation Civic. That would be '96-'00 Civics in the US.
No USDM Civic was ever an EK though. Our USDM 6G Civics include the EJ6, EJ7, EJ8, EM1 and EN1.
EJ6 - D16Y (non-VTEC)
EJ7 - D16Y (VTEC-E)
EJ8 - D16Y (VTEC)
EJ9 - D14A
EK1 - D16Y (VTEC-E)
EK2 - D13B
EK3 - D15B/Z
EK4 - B16A (VTEC)
EK5 - D16A
EK6 - ?
EK7 - ?
EK8 - D16A
EK9 - B16B (VTEC)
EM1 - B16A (VTEC)
EN1 - D16B (CNGeng. VTEC)

No problem. A lot of people seem to get the impression that the US got all the slow Civics. That's not really the truth though. There are other Civics in Japan and Europe that lean more towards fuel economy than ours.
Plus we get coupes. Many other countries never even saw Civic coupes. And we get the GX, a natural gas powered Civic sedan, which no other country got at all!

Our VTi/SiR was the Si. It just happens that their B16A equipped car came in sedan and/or hatch design and ours came in the coupe. So in the Honda world, the thought of a DOHC-powered 6G coupe is rare.
And don't worry, only one country got the CTR anyway. Japan. It is often seen in Europe (as compared with how it's seen here), but that's because they're imported over.
