What's up with my gas tank/gauge?
I just bought a 98' Civic HX. I love the car and I bought it for saving on MPG's.
However, I can't get a good read on how much gas is in the tank. The gauge will often show the gas at one point but then it changes (up and down) pretty significantly. In other words the gas gauge doesn't seem consistent or too accurate.
Also, when the gauge is nearing about 1/8 tank left the car's engine will sputter when going up a hill (probably because the gas level has shifted due to the incline), but yet the empty gas light usually hasn't even come on yet. Thus, I usually try and fill up at 1/4 tank left. What's up with this gas gauge/tank thing?
Thanks.

It's like that on all civics.. Just fill up after 250 miles to be safe.. It's never good to let the gas tank get that low.. You suck up all the shitty sludge and stuff.

I have a 96 cx hatch and I dont even think honda put a gas light in mine. I have tried on purpose to make it come on my running it dry. I always count miles for my fillups. and when near empty, it will cut off. The most i've been able to top off at that point was 10 gallons exactly, so I know there is more gas somewhere!
oh, and about the gas needle.....never had a honda that was too accurate about the level of gas in the tank!

a little off topic i know, but letting it that low, below a 1/4 tank, is bad because the gasoline itself is what cools the fuel pump inside the tank. pump failure is often due to over heating the pump for periods of time. just my .02
