I plan to purchase a few new OEM bolts for my build. Instead of purchasing ALL new hardware (for the entire car) I would like to clean them up. I was thinking about painting the heads of the bolts and entire nuts, but not sure how that would hold up against rachet contact. What about having them dipped for cleaning? I'm not even sure of the process or pricing but I'm sure it can be done. Where? I don't know who I would contact neither.
I have the entire car broke down and going to respray everything. Old looking hardware would not look good
Thanks for any input

i have been following your build thread and my advice to you would be.. for the all the visible bolts such as the fenders/headlights/hood.. purchase new bolts.. they come in gold most of the time from honda..
as far as your supsension/gas tank/basic re-assembly of the vehicle i would soak the bolts in simple green for a couple of days and see how they turn out, if that doesnt do the trick try engine de-greaser..
hope this helps

Hey, thanks for the info. That sounds like a good way to start. I'm going to soak the bolts for a few days in engine degreaser and then a couple days in Simple Green. I think you are right about the hood, fender, and headlight bolts about going with new OEM ones
And thanks for following my build
ADDED: Damn, just noticed the link in your sig. That is truely awesome (I never thought I could pull of one of the best builds ever. Believe it or not, the responses are what take me one step further to make it the best thread I can. Truely appreciated

What did you do just go to your local honda dealer? Very interested in getting all new bolts.

Keep in mind that most of your bolts have a protective coating that prevents rust. You don't want to do anything too harsh that may remove that.

i found the part by going to Honda Parts Deals
i then referenced the image found for front fender

sometimes i use this site because it ends up being cheaper than local honda parts.. after finding the bolt in the image (#9) i went up to honda and when he pulled it up on his screen i just showed him.. told me they were .22 cent a piece and i told him to order me 100
i always use the images on honda parts deals to find stuff for wire tucks/body work/etc.. they have full grommet layouts and diagrams for almost every aspect of the car..
hope this helps

Replace all your 10mm bolts on the outside of your body with those from the inside of a honda at the wrecking yard. They will all look brand spanking new and most have never been touched since honda put them in there.

This is true.
You can swap your strut bolts from the back to the front, since they've been covered by plastic for years and years.

i dont think he wants to use old bolts... check his build thread in his signature or mine.. the detail of his build is by far too in depth to use old used bolts..

x2... and because Honda was so nice to use the same bolts on many models, its easy to find the ones you need. Most yards usually don't charge you for a handleful bolts either.

I took most of my visable bolts and took a wire brush to them. Once i got all the corrosion and rust off, i spayed them with a silver anti-rust primer. They came out pretty good. None of the primer
scratched off when i put them back on, and they've been holding up nicely for about 4 months now.

i toss my grimy bolts in a jar of gasoline, and then scrub them with a tooth brush. repeat as necessary. works for me and they come out looking great.

wire wheel on bench grinder, stick the bolts thru a box and use dupli color spray can clear to prevent corrosion. ive done this on old car restos before, and they actually hold up really well and look good IMO

you can also use the tumblers that harbor freight and northern tool sell for this exact reason. Otherwise measuring the bolt and ordered a box from northern tool would only cost you a couple bucks for about a hundred of them. The main problem with tumbling the stock bolts is that they are plated and the tumbling, although cleaning all materials off, will also remove the plating leaving the mild steel exposed increasing the chance of rust. So you would need to re-electro plate the bolts. New factory bolts, or ordering bolts from mcmastercarr would be the best idea.
