unorthodox crank pulley? good or bad?
has anyone ever ran an unorthodox crank pully on their car? i just purchased one on craigslist for 30 and im hearing bad things from them like that they are "unbalanced" can anyone confirm this as true or untrue? thanks
its not so much as getting power out of it but that the guy i bought my motor from had grinded down his crank pulley to look like a a type r, and i figured y not upgrade to a better one if its only gonna cost me $30 and i have to replace it any way.
Your stock pully is a harmonic balancer this pully isn't. It will shorten bearing life. Since there are no performance gains it really isn't worth the risk.

not true for all, my old dohc zc crank pully is 1 solid piece, no rubber lining like my a6 pully.

Got one for my civic when I did my motor swap. Have had no issues with it at all. Kinda had to get it because the B series motor sits too close to the fender. Only complaint I have with it is that there are no timing marks. Have to turn your motor to Top Dead Center and make your marks on the pully.
see i always thought that the lightened crank pulleys were just that, lighter versions of the stock pulleys. so its not a good idea to put one on my LS since im gonna be goin LS V-tec in the near future???

i have an aftermarket crank pulley and everything is good to go.
most if not all of our motors dont use crankpulley/harmonic balancers
edit= you would want it to be around the same size as stock so you dont wear out your alternator

I had one on my ride before I went sc. And it worked fine and you could notice a lil bit of difference. Only issue I had was that the shop that did it, said that there was a different size belt needed (not sure if it was true but whatever). And they didn't adjust something right cause I ended up coming back cause of the belt being loose.
So I guess my only issue was the shop that did it lol. find a good shop to do it.

It should be fine. I always hear of people knocking the pulleys because they dont have a damper. The aluminum pulley is made of billet and should be pretty well balanced if it was machined correctly. I have run one for years, I personally think its a H-T myth passed around as gospel. I dont like the fact it has no timing marks though. If you want a have a CTR pulley and a aluminum CTR copy that both have the proper timing marks on them.
If you are worries about balancing, bring it to a machine shop. Having one of those spun at 10000rpm and checked for vibrations is less then 30 minutes of shop use. A few bucks would get any machinist to do it on there lunch break.
If it's off, get it balanced. Ask him to set machine marks at the same time (mark them yourself first).

YUP best thing is you should take the pulley and crank to a machine shop to balance them together,I'm aware that these pulleys shorten the life of honda oil pumps the bearings???also if you DO use it and you dont want to take the crank to the machine shop the other way is to get a lighten flywheel to balance things out,I use the OEM B16B ctr pulley with a balance crank and a TODA flywheel so far so good just my 2 cents GOOD LUCK...MOE@HYPER16VALVE...
