A mesh is better than nothing.
I'm not a huge fan of icon, yet there's no data out there to suggest that they're unsafe.
A mesh obviously won't hold up as well in a slide as a leather jacket will, but it'll do something.
If you know you're going out and you're going to go fast, i'd sport the leather.

I have a textile joe rocket nova it should be close in comparison to the icon...it is way lighter compared to leather ones. i cant stand hot weather, but riding with the JR is okay, just gets hot at stoplights. however the padding is foam, seems like it wont provide much protection, better than wearing like a hoodie but i dunno. my buddie went down taking a turn, w. braking, at around 20mph, and he had a JR just like mine. He landed shoulder first and just walked away with bruises and sores. i just figure going down at like 80+ either wearing a mesh or leather wont make that much of a difference.

It'll make a difference in the condition of your skin, but you may be dead for other reasons in a high-speed get-off.

performance textiles are catching up to leather, but i doubt the best thread is used in the lower end jackets. IIRC, leather stands up to asphalt abrasion for about 8 seconds, at 60 mph. most textile jackets on the market last about 3-4? at least that's what people say...

you can find some really well vented leather jackets. my dainese vents well--too well, but it's not summer here yet, so i might change my story. it was also pretty expensive. the JR leather stuff vents pretty well too when you open up the back zipper vents and the arm vents.

in the end, mesh is better than nothing. also, if you find the cheap armor a little disturbing, i'd invest in a back protector. your arms and shoulders might get a little bruised up or rashed, but spinal injuries are teh sux.

I have one, it's nice for really hot summer days and it's better than nothing. but I'm sure it wouldn't protect as well as leather.

I have the Icon TIMAX 2. I recently went down with it on at about 40mph. It left 2 holes in the jacket ands where the 2 holes were there wasnt 1 scratch on me. I was very happy with the jacket. Has a removable liner for colder days and gets good air when its warm.

Personally I run Kawasaki Factory Green Leotards, I have yet to get rashed up... even in the areas where my naughty bits hangout

i have a joe rocket phoenix 4.0 seems to be pretty nice, really breathes on warm days without the liner, and for cooler days with the liner its great. has shoulder, elbow and spine protector built in, good storage and adjustable straps for fit.

lol, I think I was the only one I saw rocking a jacket this past weekend when it almost hit 80s here in Chicago. Everyone else I saw were in t-shirts or a long sleeve at most, and some had shorts

My friend went down without gear at a low speed, got some pretty bad road rash, and still doesn't ride with gear all the time

Can you change out the foam to hard CE armor? I have a JR Rector, it normally comes with foam, but I removed all the foam and replaced it with hard CE armor.

JR Reactor, Medium, Blue. Looking to sell it.

mesh is better than T-****, but perofrated leather is just as good. Its cool, and it protects like leather.

I rock the leather no matter what. It's perforated by the way (Icon).

IMO, I wouldn't wear a mesh jacket. I'd save up money and get a nice Leather one that vented really well and sweat a little.

I've got the Cortech GX-Air mesh jacket. It seems safe enough, though I haven't crash tested it, nor do I plan to. It's got leather covering the elbows, shoulder and back panels. CE armor in the shoulders and elbows/forearms as well as foam padding on the shoulders, back, and forearms. It's also a 3 layer jacket (mesh outside, wind/water proof mid, and thermal inside). I really like it a lot, though it's my first jacket. The quality seems to be there.

I have the black one

Ive "crash tested" a mesh jacket of mine. One area somehow wore all the way through and there is like a quarter size hole now.
Just that small hole at such a low speed was enough for me to buy leather this time around.

It saved your skin, didnt it?

Mesh/Textile should be treated as single-use. I'm ok with that... they're cheap and they keep me cool in the summer.
