Default 07 civic si TIGHT STEERING

I own a 2007 Honda Civic SI and unfortunately it has been sitting in my garage for about a month now being fixed. I took it into a curb making a hard right doing 65mph. Tires did not skid before hitting the curb so I guess the traction control kicked in and gave me mean under steer. I hit the curb with my tires turned right, came off the curb and tires squealed and stopped. Air bag also deployed and I did not have my seatbelt and the **** didn't even touch me.

Damage to my car -> outer tie rod snapped, front sub frame bent, control arm bent, and steering wheel tight as hell

I replaced the outer tie rod (did not align it yet), replaced front sub frame (not fully tightened b/c I have to start the engine and let the motor mounts sit correctly then tighten them), and control arm replaced. The battery is not connected to the vehicle (I am not sure how the electronic power steering works and maybe since it is not connected it is tight? but i dont think that is the case b/c it is pretty tight and tires are off the ground and outer tie rods are not connected). When I turn the ignition key to the on position to release the steering lock and then try to move the steering it is tight in both directions. When I get to the far right it is normal (nice and easy to turn) but only for about a 1/2 - 3/4 turn. Then once you start turning to the left pass the normal (easy to turn) point it gets tight. I was wondering if I could adjust the power steering rack or does this have to be replaced? And how would I go about adjusting it? I did not take this to a dealership b/c I wanted to fix it myself. I just started working on cars and have seen how dealerships tend to overcharge and how other respectable shops just rush the job to get it over with. I wanted to do it myself and do it right and I love working on cars. I did not expect to be working on my 2007 Honda Civic SI from me crashing it though. But since I broke the ice I will most likely be doing more work to this car after I fix this up.

Thanks a lot,
Jacques

Now this is a good example of why VSA isnt any better than not having VSA... bad drivers will just find ways to break stuff.

Honestly the EPS system really isn't something alot of people KNOW about...

it could be that you damaged the unit during the crash?

If i had to yell out a TOTALLY uneducated guess, i'd say you possible fried something ? when the car hit and system was engaging?

Any reason you decided NOT to go through the insurance?
a similar crash happened to a guy's si on ANOTHER si forum and it was totalled out.

I've been driving for a few years now, roughly 4. I have been driving with a license for 2 years in june. I was tired as hell like usual b/c I am a full time engineering student and was working 26hrs a week. I went into work and the owner said I looked real tired today. I worked 6hrs then drove home. Going into 4th gear doing about 74 then I see a cop in his car with his radar gun. He caught me off guard. I then turned the next corner doing about 65mph and it felt like my front tires were on ice going str8 towards the curb and not turning much. No seatbelt one hand on the steering wheel I just braced for impact. Car banged up on the curb and then back into the street and then the tires squealed. Then I pulled over and my fender was a little bent in from the impact. Inner tie rod broke, control arm bent, front sub frame bent, and steering tight as hell. I dont know wtf happened that day b/c I'm use to taking turns at 60mph. I have this one S turn by my house that i usually fly around on a dry day sometimes. So I really dont know wtf happened that day I was in shock and pissed but lucky as hell I didn't hit the big *** tree that was 3 feet in front of where I hit. I wouldn't be on this site right now. Be in the hospital or maybe worse. And people are making jokes, laughing, but no one has an answer. Just laughing cus they dont have a fuckkin clue how to fix it. I'll just wait til the manuals come in. I just didn't want to take apart the EPS unit and check its internals to see wats wrong with it b4 reading a manual. B/c sometimes you can damage a unit just by taking it apart the wrong way. The manuals should be in soon they got lost in the ****** mail the first time. I'm pretty sure the Power Steering Gear Box is damaged b/c under the steering column the shaft from the gear box doesnt look properly aligned through the Steering joint cover. Well whoever can help thanks a lot. Its appreciated.

I think you made a bad decision not having the insurance company fix it, sounds to me like that crash did a lot more damage then you thought... good luck man.

65mph in any area that has curbs is most likely going way past the speed limit... Not first learning your vehicle (take the corner at 25, then 30, and so on) is dumb... Going at a "hard right" at 65 mph is dumb no matter what... Not knowing your car well enough to know your driving ability needs the traction control turned on or off is not the time to take any corner fast...

65mph around a corner, I am assuming was in town since there was a curb... What if your mom was driving the other way from that turn? Or your little brother or sister on the sidewalk he slammed onto?

If you want to drive like an idiot, do it in the country or on a new part of town where houses have not been built only the roads have been layed... And learn progressivly...

Yes I have done one dumb thing in one of my past vehicles, I had it slide off the road and onto some dirt, but that was out in the country away from any other vehicles and people... I knew that cars ability, but I had a new suspension installed and did not re-learn the new suspension... But I did have enough control to not slide it sideways off the road, I fixed everything wrong with it and had it back on the road a week later...

Once the car was fixed I took it to a new part of town where there were no houses so you could see across several blocks of road and progressivly re-learned the cars ability... Then I did the same in the rain so I knew what I could and could not do... The most I got out of a modified suspension (eibach springs, KYB Generation 2 struts), wide gummy tires, a huge front spoiler that was 1" off the ground which wrapped with the front of the car, and thick sway bars was 45mph on a 90º corner... So for someone not knowing what he is doing (in a stock vehicle), and doing it at 65mph is insane...

1) There's a difference between VSA (vehicle stability assist) and traction control, as far as I know the Si does NOT presently have "traction control".

2) Attach the battery and see if the power steering acts better, though its entirely possible you messed it up with the impact if the tie rod was fubarred.

Sucks man, I don't know much about my SI (learnin...), so I can't help, but you seem fairly motivated/dedicated, so I'm sure you'll find out what the deal is.

....and wear a fuggin seatbelt. it's hard to look cool when you're dead.

kroze, you're an a-hole. jerkoff marine. if you're so against "rice" cars (which, by the way, is not true of Hondas anymore, for the most part....and even if Hondas were made entirely in Japan, or freakin Bangladesh for that matter, they are superb cars. I'd rather be driving an import nowadays instead of a Dodge or Ford anyhow...) but if you're prejudice of Japanese cars, then WHY ARE YOU ON THIS FORUM....LOSER? don't you have some push-ups to do or something, jock itch.
