Getting the bikes to the DMV for the test
Just got curious.
How does your state handle the perplexing situation of having to use your own bike to take a test to get a license when technically it's illegal to ride it there?
From what I can tell in VA, it's just kind of a dont ask dont tell policy on how you got it there.

i thought you already had your license? I suppose they think someone else with a license will ride it there or you trailer it

In Cali, a permit lets you ride except you can't go on freeways, ride at night, or ride with passengers. All you have to do is pass a written exam to get your permit.

You can't get riding permits in VA???
You can get a permit by driving to the testing locations and then taking the written test.
Permits for both Ohio and Missouri were something along the lines of no riding at night, no passengers and in Ohio, no riding on the highway.

yes we have a 25 MC written test for our permits. The thing is you must ride "with" someone who is a licensed rider. I guess they think if you have someone who is licensed around you it wont hurt as bad when you fall or expletive up or something.

yea in illinois i think the guy doesnt have to ride with you. the licensed rider can drive behind you. i dont know how that'll help the rider improve...
In IL you also need to be riding with someone 21 years or older who has had their license for 1 or more years.
To get your bike to the DMV you're supposed to ride over there with someone who is 21. I hear some places they don't care, while others will make sure you had an "escort" there to take the test. *shrug*
I got mine through Ride Chicago riding school, so it didn't effect me. Taking the test on a 250 > taking the test on a 650.

If you are 18 or over, you may
apply for a 12-month instruction
permit to operate a motorcycle
other than a motor driven cycle. It
allows you to drive only during
daylight hours, under the direct
supervision of a licensed motorcycle
operator, 21 years or older
with at least one year driving
experience.
So yeah, it seems like they could just be driving behind you as well. *shrug*

in MD i dont even think you can ride it there with someone. you have to have it trailered in; they have to see you unload it; then they inspect it; you take test; they watch you load it back up and drive off

Take it outside of Nova or sign up early?
Although Rguy and paul probably would rather just write a check

wow.... yea I live in PA. for a long time up until 2 years ago u gave 10bucks and u had a M class permit good for a year now its 35 and a really easy test u have to be 16 to ride and someone 21 years of age has to ride behind u, Once your 18 u can ride alone only in the day.can't ride at night, or ride with passengers with a permit but alot of riders with permets do it anyways b/c cops around here let u go or u just don't stop you and if you do they say "you must be a new rider b/c you stoped, Thank you. haha. your best bet is trailer it But even better if u trust someone with your bike is to ride it over there for you. the only bad thing in pa is now the Helmet law was removed and insurance has gone up 10%. I always ride with the helmet anyways Cars suck I've seen to many bikers get hurt. "There are bikers who have been down and Bikers who are going to be down." ~unknown
