manual steering rack help.
Hey lads..
its the newbie EF9 owner here again
I'm planning on Swapping out my PS Rack out for a manual rack in my EF9,
I'm just wondering, does anyone have any links to how-to's and pictures etc? or advice, on how to go about doing this?
just to save me abit of head aches?
I do have a couple of q's:
1) does the motor need to be out?
2) can i do it with the crossmember in place?
cheers in advance

I wouldn't cap it.
You need to loop it and keep fluid in there.

there was a lot of discussion about this amongst the 4dr guys and i thought someone had proven that there were differences between not only the racks, but also the crossmembers.....?
since it wasn't clear (at the time) i ended up swapping both the x-member & the rack for manual units.
it was fun pulling all the power steering crap out
but if you end up swapping racks only, there's a trick to getting it out of the crossmember. after you disconnect the tie rod ends, you have to turn the wheel all the way to the left -or right?- to get the inner tie rod to clear the crossmember....then it slides out after you disconnect it from your steering column

what is the difference in turns between the manual and p/s rack?
the manual rack is not going to cost me anything, and i'd rather not do a PS loop, did that to my old EK, was a PITA, and the local WOF [warrent of fitness / vehicle testing etc] guys dont like it much.

PS rack has shorter turns to lock, but a longer gear ratio. so its worse off. the amount of gears is just shorter compared to the manual rack because of the hydraulics so lock to lock is less.
dont go by lock to lock numbers. only go by gear ratio's.
Si's have the best ratio.

and there IS a compatability issue between subframes with power steering and manual racks. not sure if its ok one way and not the other. but i know its an issue.

ok...
I know that with a manual rack, you need to use two bushings to fit the manual rack into a ps rack's place.

Wow good thread. I myself can say that I hae my manual rack... many turns on the wheel. The SI rack seems like it would be hard to source.
Kinda intrested to see if anyone does do a PS rack swap

yup you have to turn it all the way to the one side to get it out.
you dont have to remove the engine either..
ps i have a SI manual rack that needs to be rebuilt and the crossmember if anyone needs it.
good luck

oh and i work in a machine shop so i can make modifications. if it is possible to do the swap than i would be interested in buying your si manual rack.
