Default Super 6-Point Cage in EG Hatch

Added some new bars on Page 3.

I had finally gotten around to building a cage for my EG hatch. Originally I just wanted to pay someone to do it, but that was a chore in itself. After waiting, and waiting some more, I decided I would do it myself and ask a friend to help out as well. Neither my friend nor I have had ANY cage building experience prior. We figured it would be good practice and would be interesting to see how it turned out. In the end I could not be happier. Everything turned out perfect. The welds are compliments of my friend Joey. I did all the migs and we split the fabbing. Everything is 1 ¾ chromoly. Anyways, just wanted to share some pics of our efforts. Comments are welcome, unless they are negative

I really like it. It is very stiff and strong, just hope it's not for nhra/ihra with the low door bars.
Nice job!!!

Doesn't the main hoop have to be 1 piece?

Looks like a god damn jungle gym.

Good thing you didn't copy anyone else's cage, or you could have lost your part time job!

That cage should be good enough for a 300hp car like yours, right?

That was my first thought too. I am pretty sure the main hoop has to be 1 piece, with less than or equal to 180 degrees of bend?

edit: drag rules might be slightly more relaxed than the RR rules.

Actually, the car is back down to 2 to 3 man power. The cage should be able to hold up to the speeds we can push it. And as far as the rules for bends and everything goes, the car is a street car for the most part and will see the track every once and a while. Thank you for the comments so far though.

Is this going to be a cage or just a roll bar? I really like the way the main hope is set up. Are you planning to add d-bars also?

don't you think that the safety rules for NHRA, SCCA, NASA ect are their because well its most likely the safest way to do it?

It would help if he told us what type of racing the cage is setup for.

He said street and occasional track. I can tell you, around here I have seen some trash *** cages pass inspection. Welds so unpenetrated I bet I could kick the cage and break it. I would've done a one piece main hoop without question, but I seriously doubt this dude is going to get turned away. Maybe if he were doing some type of dedicated car, but for just test and tune nights...no way.

Drag.
And thank you RC000E, for friday night drags I wont have any problems what so ever passing tech. And for the 2 piece hoop, I have seen a few cars race @ IDR and Nopi with the same hoop design. In the unlikelihood I do get turned away, o well. I still feel 10x safer in my car now.

I hope you wear a helmet driving it around on the street.

Cage looks nice. I've seen some cars with the 2 piece main hoop before too....I'm not an NHRA inspector at all so I have no idea if they would pass or not.

As far as i know the 2 pc hoop is not legal, though i do believe it's plenty safe, if not safer, and much more rigid than a typical 1 pc. hoop.

Why? The car is not equipped with a-pillar bars so there is no metal even close to contacting my head. If my head were to hit the metal it would have to fly back quite a bit. A friend with some concerned interest of the main hoop looked into the NHRA rulebook to look if it stated the main hoop could not be 2 pieces. We were unsuccessful. But unless there is another rule book I think I am in good shape.
