Clutch cable adjustment - Is no free play bad??
car is a 90 hatch si with a swapped z6. using si cable tranny with a brand new Action 2KS kevlar disc.
heres the problem:
on the first day i drove around after the swap the car would drive properly for a while until all of a sudden when i need to get into 1st gear it just wont move!
after playing with it for minutes at a time it finally gets in gear and i can go until the next light or stop sign.......
but after i let the car sit for a while and come back to it everything is fine, but after driving it for a bit, it happens again.
so i adjusted the cable, and tried the nut at varying positions with lots of slack, a little and none at all.
im looking at the release arm that the end of the cable attaches to for the amount of free play
the service manual says there should be about 3-4mm of free play in the arm.
with lots of free play (above 3-4mm) - wont even go in gear, pedal is very soft
and i tried the suggested free play of 3-4mm and it also wont go in gear.
little free play (2mm or less) - still wont go in gear, pedal feel is slightly harder
no free play (no movement of the arm whatsoever) - i can finally get it gear, and the pedal is very stiff.
so the other question is having no free play in the arm really bad for the new clutch? its the only way the car will work. is it just a BAD cable?
does the lack of free play mean that the clutch is partially disengaging? (meaning its like im on the clutch all the time without actually stepping on the pedal - i think that makes sense correct me if im wrong)

Adjust the nut to the bottom of the bracket. Pull the cable up with your right hand, and adjust the nut lower till it feels stiff.
Clutch Pedal will sit higher , with a firmer feel.

i dont think that one can be adjusted, ive tried that already and if you try to turn it, it just spins.

that means its too too loose !
try adjusting it clockwise to firm it up !

so i just took another quick look, and theres no nut to be adjusted, just a rubber stopper and a metal washer at the end of the cable. like it said it all just spins.
well i just found this in the archives, looks like it maybe a good solution.

so this morn, i got some aluminum wire and wrapped it around the rubber stopped at the end of the cable and held it all together with a worm clamp. now i have about 2-3mm of free play which is more than i had before (i just hope its enough), and it does feel better now.
