Painting small areas
Hey guys, I'd like to ask some stuff about painting my car. I was thinking of buying a palm sander, body filler, primer, sand paper, and a spray can of my car's paint mixed at a store. Should that be all I need? What kinda grit sandpaper in stages should I be using? Thanks!
describe your small areas...
you don't need a palm sander and you'd be much better off spending that money on a set of sanding blocks.
sand the painted area w/ 400 but don't remove the paint on the good areas, just scuff the clear. sand the damaged areas w/ 220 and do you body work. shape w/ the sanding blocks using 220, 320. if needed use more aggressive paper to get close. spray a sealer, spray your base coat over the body work. clear panel.

you' do have a point. might as well practice on a car you don't care how it comes out. instead of on a car you want to be perfect. once i getting ready to do the body work on my civic i'm going to bring my truck into the garage and proctice on it. and it's not if legal for the road lol.

Add metal prep (to stop rust, rust is like cancer), airplane stripper (to take off dull/dead/cracking paint), primer surfacer (to build up the substrate), and epoxy primer (seal/and promote better adhesion for paint to stick on) to your list. Practice correctly and you will be a better autobody tech.
